This position will be in the Department of Developmental, Molecular and Chemical Biology, a Basic Science research department in the School of Medicine.

The research in the Moore lab aims to understand how regulation of mRNA processing contributes to normal development and disease, with a focus on coronavirus pathogenesis, cancers with poor prognoses, and differentiation of adipocytes. Applicants with prior experience in these or related areas, as well as mouse models, transcriptomics, proteomics, and/or RNA biology, are encouraged to apply. The long-range goal is to determine the mechanism by which mRNA processing is regulated and the functional consequences of this regulation, and in doing so, inform future therapeutic strategies that target this step in gene expression.

This is a grant funded position and is not eligible for severance pay.

The Research Associate will work in collaboration with the senior investigator in the Moore Lab and will work independently to participate in or lead a portion of a research project(s). They will contribute ideas and suggestions to the research effort, operates independently and publishes papers in collaboration with the senior investigator.

Responsibilities include:

• Performs scientific research as a professional member of the research team
• Carries out independent research and may lead a portion of the project
• Explores and defines problem (statement), plans the approach and sequence of steps, executes experiments or studies, interprets findings and documents results
• Keeps current with developments in the scientific field
• Publishes results and authosr papers in collaboration with the senior investigator; presents findings
• Participates in other laboratory responsibilities such as supervision and/or training of graduate students and postdoctoral fellows; development of grant proposals, writing papers, etc.

Basic Requirements:

Knowledge and experience typically acquired through: 

• Three years’ minimum experience in a postdoctoral research position
• PhD, MD, DVM, DDS, DMD or equivalent Doctoral degree
• Experience in culture and genetic manipulations of mammalian cells
• Molecular biology techniques needed to analyze genetic mutations and expression of mRNA and proteins

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience with mammalian cell culture as a model organism
• Proven ability to write manuscripts and contribute to the writing of grant applications
• Experience supervising undergraduates and junior graduate students in research projects
• Experience working with BSL2 conditions and willingness to work at the BSL3 level

Special Work Schedule Requirements:

• Weekly hours typically exceed the standard 35 hours
• May have to work on weekends and travel off-site to conduct experiments or to attend workshops and conferences
