Position Summary

The Haller Lab in the Department of Neurological Surgery at the Washington University School of Medicine has an opening for a motivated Research Assistant. The lab studies the human genetics of pediatric neurological disorders including Chiari I malformation, syringomyelia and hydrocephalus. The three main areas of focus are 1) collecting and sequencing DNA from patients 2) testing disease-related hypotheses in zebrafish and 3) performing high-throughput functional assays of disease-related genes. The position will include (but may not be limited to) a focus on curating a DNA biorepository, tissue culture, using CRISPR/Cas9 and related genome engineering techniques, molecular cloning and zebrafish husbandry.

This position assists with research studies, experiments, preparation of material and documentation.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

• Conducts research experiments and assays.
• Maintains data files and detailed research notes.
• Prepares reagents and solutions. 
• Complies with established safety procedures and maintains required documentation on laboratory and specimen conditions.
• Ensures lab conditions and equipment are properly cleaned and maintained in accordance with established procedures.

Working Conditions

This position works in a laboratory environment with potential exposure to biological and chemical hazards.  The individual must be physically able to wear protective equipment and to provide standard care to research animals.

Preferred Qualifications

Demonstrated ability to implement general laboratory procedures, conduct research, and record findings, with focus on pursuit of advanced education in field.

Required Qualifications

Equivalent of a bachelorâ™s degree with two to three years of experience in laboratory operations.

Salary Range

$15.77 - $26.83 / Hourly

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
