The United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology (USCAP), based in Palm Springs, is seeking a Managing Editor for its two scholarly journals.
Modern Pathology (Mod Path) aims to provide an authoritative platform for high-impact clinical and translational research studies in pathology. Its scope encompasses advances in molecular diagnostics and genomic classification of disease as well as discoveries in immuno-oncology, computational science/applied bioinformatics, and digital pathology.
Laboratory Investigation (LI) is committed to publishing high-quality original research that enhances our understanding of human disease. We welcome studies that clarify the causes and classification of diseases, including research that connects experimental, observational, computational, and technological findings.
The Managing Editor, reporting to the Director of Journals, is a key position ensuring the successful publication of these journals, managing the day-to-day implementation, and participation in the publishing strategies, and editorial initiatives to sustain and enhance the journals’ standing within the global pathology field. The Managing Editor coordinates publication with the LI and Mod Path Editors, publishing vendor, and USCAP Publications Committee.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:
Maintains an effective, efficient, and ethical peer review process for the USCAP journals using the Editorial Manager manuscript tracking system, which includes monitoring submissions, sending reminders to editors and reviewers, and notifying authors of journal decisions.
Acts as a liaison for communication between editors, authors and reviewers.
Confirms that accepted manuscripts meet style, format and English usage guidelines before transferring them to the publisher.
Works closely with the publisher to monitor industry trends and evaluate and adopt new tools and technologies for content management.
Creates and maintains documentation of editorial policies and procedures.
Assists in preparing reports on journal metrics, achievements, and new initiatives for Journal Editors, USCAP leadership, Board of Directors, and Publications Committee.
Helps organize virtual and in-person meetings with the Editorial Boards, USCAP Publications Committee and the Publisher.
Serves as primary liaison to social media editors to ensure active engagement with journal content.
Assists in the identification of new and emerging areas of content.
Completes corporate training on a timely basis.
Provides and models excellent customer service, following up on complaints, questions, and concerns; responds to internal/external customer needs in a friendly, timely and efficient manner.
Ensures a member-focused culture and models relationship-building skills in all interactions.
Fosters an inclusive environment marked by personal visibility, open communication, relationship building, teamwork, and empowerment.
Oversees and complies with all established safe work practices and attends to all safety-related training provided or made available by USCAP.
Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS

Education and/or Experience
Graduate degree in science or health-related field or other complementary discipline preferred.
At least three years of experience in a scientific journal editorial office or related experience.
Required Technical / Other Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of scientific publishing business models and approaches.
Hands-on experience with at least one manuscript submission system.
Knowledge of the current standards from the Committee on Publication Ethics and the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors, as well as other global publishing associations, and experience with screening manuscripts for ethical concerns.
Advanced experience with Microsoft Office: Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel.
Ability to learn new technologies as required.
Impeccable verbal and written communication skills; excellent presentation skills.
Excellent editing skills.
Experienced in project management, vendor management.
Strong interpersonal skills and ability to exercise good judgment, tact, and diplomacy.
Ability to engage collaboratively with stakeholders.

The chosen candidate will be expected to travel to USCAP meetings and events as needed; be able to work a varied schedule depending on the needs of the organization, and may include occasional evenings, weekends and early mornings. Background check is required.
This is an exempt position. A candidate may choose to work remote or in the Palm Springs office. No relocation assistance is offered for this position.
Salary Range: $90,000 - $110,000 annually commensurate with experience and qualifications. USCAP offers a generous benefits package.
