Position Summary
This position is designed to provide PhD-level expertise in helping numerous faculty members and their students perform experiments at the School of Dentistry. The candidate for this Lab Manager position will perform detailed molecular biology experiments as well as train and mentor students engaged in research at the School of Dentistry. In addition, this lab manager will run the school’s microscopy and flow cytometry cores.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Perform a wide variety of experiments investigating the activities of virulence factors in the bacterial pathogen Yersinia pestis as well as studies with various oral pathogens.
- Studies involving the interactions of oral pathogens and human cells/tissues or biomaterials and human cells/tissues will also be involved.
- Experiments will require prior training in the following techniques: PCR, recombinant DNA cloning, protein gels, and Western blotting, protein purification, bacterial serum-resistance assays, tissue culture work, growth of bacterial cultures, and sterile technique for bacteria.
- Prepare media and laboratory stocks of chemicals and reagents.
- Maintain a detailed laboratory notebook.
- Help draft manuscripts related to scientific findings.
- Assist with assembling grants for intramural and extramural funding.
- Train and assist Dental Student Researchers at Detroit Mercy Dental, and undergraduates working in the lab.
- Maintain laboratory compliance with various safety regulations including chemical safety and biohazard safety.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
- A college degree.
- Five to seven years of experience.
- This position requires PhD level knowledge of molecular biology and will require the candidate have prior experience working with microbial pathogens. Experience with fluorescence microscopy and flow cytometry is preferred as the candidate will be in charge of running the school’s microscopy and flow cytometry cores.
Preferred Qualifications
- Some experience analyzing data from bioinformatics studies such as analysis of microbial genomes, human microbiome studies, and RNA-Seq would be beneficial.
Physical Requirements
Job may require lifting light weight objects (1 to 10 pounds) with no repetitive bending or stooping. Occasionally lift average weight objects (1 to 10 pounds).
Work Environment
Occasional exposure to objectionable conditions or variations such as those found in variable weather conditions or light industrial settings.
Salary/Pay Information
Commensurate with experience.

Monday – Friday, 8:30am – 5:00pm
