Job Summary TheGenetic Counselor shall be responsible for:
Provides genetic counseling to individuals and families at risk for specific hereditary disorders. Documents family pedigrees entering all information into the electronic medical record. Interprets family history, clinical and genetic findings to predict risk to patient. Obtains and reviews medical, developmental and family history information as part of diagnostic team.
Screens referrals for outpatient service identifying hospital services needed for patient and suggesting alternative measures for utilizing these services. Responds to inquiries related to diagnostic evaluations, hereditary risks, genetic testing and pregnancy exposures.
Assists in identifying appropriate genetic testing. Provides education to the patients and/or families regarding the option of testing ensuring that they understand the possible implications of a genetic test result.
Interprets genetic results and communicates with healthcare providers and patients and/or families about the significance of the results.
Participates in comprehensive clinic for patients with blood disorders and collaborates with the multidisciplinary team to establish an appropriate plan of care. Attends multidisciplinary case conferences when applicable.
Reviews available medical literature and identifies current data useful in the care of patients and/or families.
Supports patients and/or families in identifying resources relating to obscure hematological conditions.
Provides personalized and culturally sensitive genetics services considering patients and/or families beliefs and desires as well as ensures confidentiality.
Assesses patients and families psychological and emotional needs regarding their genetic risk, diagnosis and test results. Refers to multidisciplinary team members when indicated.
When indicated, reviews with patients and /or families diagnosis specific recommendations for pregnancy as well as reproductive options.
Documents patient related activities and relevant data in charts and develops plans for follow-up as needed.
Develops and presents educational materials and programs for internal and external use. Participates in the development and presentation of written documents and web-based materials for genetics education programs for physicians, other health professionals, and lay populations.
Serves as a resource to hematology program regarding genetic information and providing optimal genetics services to hematology program patients and/or families.
In order to qualify you must have:
Master's Degree Genetic Counseling.
Current Massachusetts license as a Genetic Counselor.
Current Genetic Counselor certification from the American Board of Genetic Counseling or from the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics.
At least 2 years of directly related experience.
