Our lab aims to uncover the genetic and neural mechanisms underlying complex social behaviors such as aggression, mating, and parental care. We specialize in developing and applying genetic tools, including CRISPR/Cas9 and Tol2 transgenics, in two fish models: the African cichlid (Astatotilapia burtoni) and the mangrove rivulus killifish (Kryptolebias marmoratus).
Currently, we are focused on generating mutants to explore the roles of candidate genes in olfactory sensation and social behavior. We are seeking a Research Assistant to help manage the generation of CRISPR mutants. Key responsibilities include performing CRISPR injections in fish embryos, and assisting with the rearing and breeding of new cichlid and killifish lines. The Research Assistant will also carry out molecular biology experiments such as PCR for genotyping, and quantitative PCR to measure gene expression. Additional training will be provided in microscopy, immunostaining, and next-generation sequencing techniques. The goal is to contribute both to data generation and manuscript preparation.
The ideal candidate will have at least a Bachelor's degree (BSc) in biology or related fields. Prior experience with molecular biology techniques - such as DNA/RNA extraction, gel electrophoresis, genotyping, or quantitative PCR - is desirable but not required. It is key to have some independence but also be willing to work as a member of a team of graduate student, post-doctoral and faculty researchers.
The Research Assistant will contribute to the department's mission by advancing high-quality research through their own efforts and by supporting the broader research team, thus enhancing productivity. Additionally, the Research Assistant will play a role in mentoring undergraduate students involved in research, furthering the department's educational goals.

Preferred Experience: Experience working with animal models, bonus for prior fish work or animal husbandry Advanced neuroscience, genetics, and/or molecular biology work Ability to manage overlapping projects and deadlines effectively Ability to work under deadlines with general guidance Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to accurately complete detailed work. Experience with immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization, molecular cloning, coding languages are all major plusses.
