| Provides genetic counseling to individuals and families in specified areas of clinical genetics, such as obstetrics, pediatrics, to help them understand and adapt to birth defects or genetic disorders by providing them with information, education, and reassurance. Supervises genetic counseling team in respective department- including hiring/firing and reviews. |
| PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES: |
- Analyzes and discusses test results and genetic information from family histories and identifies patients or families at risk for specific diseases, disorders, or syndromes, particularly as it applies to children.
- Advises patients or relatives of the risks, consequences, and nature of inherited disorders and diseases, the probability of developing or transmitting them, recurrence risks, and the options open to them in management and family planning.
- Conducts risk assessments and recommends medical or genetic testing based on analysis.
- Works with couples who want children to understand their risk to pass on certain birth defects or genetic disorders to their unborn children. Can refer for preimplantation genetic testing if indicated.
- Gains an in-depth understanding of the family history of each patient and thoroughly records the medical history of each patient, spending ample time evaluating the data.
- Determines or coordinates treatment plans by requesting laboratory services, reviewing genetics or counseling literature, and considering histories or diagnostic data.
- Explains diagnostic procedures, such ultrasound, chorionic Villus sampling, and amniocentesis.
- Assesses patients' psychological or emotional needs such as those relating to stress, fear of test results, and marital conflicts to make referral recommendations or assist patients in managing test outcomes.
- Supports and counsels patients if they find out they or their children are at risk for certain genetic diseases or disorders, and helps them with more difficult aspects and findings.
- Provides support as patients go through extensive and sometimes invasive genetic tests.
- Educates physicians and health professionals at prenatal clinics, pediatric care centers, and adult genetic centers. Participates in clinical research studies.
- Assists with Hersh Fetal Center- provides support and works with the HFC nurse navigator, sec/tech and social worker. Provides coverage for HFC for Nurse navigator vacation and sick days, which includes maintaining the HFC patient care list, scheduling appointments with peds subspecialists and potentially presenting the patient list at weekly and monthly meetings.
- Collaboration and Development of Genetic Services: Educational outreach to our referring OB/GYN physicians, community, students, residents, community physicians and other clinicians.
- Supervision: provides clinical and administrative guidance to staff genetic counselors in MFM. Evaluate performance and make recommendations for improvement.
- Functions as one of our administrative leads for the department of Maternal Fetal Medicine. Assists with department guidelines, policies and special projects.
- Oversees team payroll, approves PTO/NJSICK.

- Masters in Genetic Counseling
- NJ Genetic Counseling License
- 5-7 years of prior experience
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Must be able to effectively work in a high -volume team environment
- Ability to learn new tasks quickly and have excellent problem -solving skills
- Must be detail oriented and well organized
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Must be proficient in Microsoft Outlook, Work and Excel
