Dr. Jarrod Marto and Dr. Sara Buhrlage of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School are recruiting a creative and highly motivated Scientific Data Engineer to join the newly formed Center for Emergent Drug Targets. The goal of this program is to provide tools and reagents to support early-stage drug discovery against frontier targets as well as develop new small molecules with novel mechanism-of-action. The successful applicant will work with a small team at the interface of chemical proteomics, functional pathway analysis, structural biology, and ligand design. They will collaborate with chemical biologists, synthetic chemists, and cheminformatics scientists to design and implement computational tools, data analytic pipelines, and integrated workflows to support structure-guided design and characterization of new small molecules. This is a full-time position with flexibility for a portion of remote work. Candidates for this position will have ample opportunity to contribute to scientific publications as well as significant collaborations with industry and academic partners.
Located in Boston and the surrounding communities, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute brings together world renowned clinicians, innovative researchers and dedicated professionals, allies in the common mission of conquering cancer and related diseases. Combining extremely talented people with the best technologies in a genuinely positive environment, we provide compassionate and comprehensive care to patients of all ages; we conduct research that advances treatment; we educate tomorrow's physician/researchers; we reach out to underserved members of our community; and we work with amazing partners, including other Harvard Medical School-affiliated hospitals.
Designs and develops software, databases, and interfaces for analyzing and manipulating high throughput molecular data, with an emphasis on mass spectrometry data, in support of characterizing the in vitro and in vivo activity of new small molecule probes.
Draws upon knowledge of computer science and API design to customize data acquisition and analysis processes.
Interfaces with analytical, medicinal chemistry, structural biology, and cheminformatics scientists to integrate diverse data streams and develop visualization and other user-friendly data stores.
Collaborates with diverse laboratory and computational researchers to leverage integrated data to guide ligand design, deconvolute targets, explore mechanism-of-action and cellular response, or generate new biological hypotheses.
Adds new software and applications that have been internally developed or imported from outside sources to in-house systems.
Interfaces with institutional system administrators as necessary to maintain laboratory computational infrastructure.
Qualifications:
S. or M.S. degree in Bioinformatics, Computer Science, or Ph.D. in systems/chemical biology with significant focus on bioinformatics. Suitably qualified candidates from related scientific fields also considered.
Ability to plan, develop, and test software tools independently and within a small team
Strong multi-tasking capabilities
Desire to work in a fast-paced, multi-disciplinary research environment
Desire to interact with researchers having diverse skills
Preferred Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Experience developing well-documented code in C#, R, or Python
Experience in the analysis of high-throughput molecular data in general, and mass spectrometry-based proteomic data in particular. Experience working with proteomic data from the Bruker timsTOF platform a plus.
Knowledgeable in modern mass spectrometry proteomic acquisition methods
Knowledgeable in structural biology (PyMOL, alphafold) and chemical (DataWarrior, CCD Vault) databases and software tools
Familiarity with common software development and deployment tools such as VCS (e.g., git, hg), Docker, and package managers (e.g., pip, Anaconda)
Ability to work in SQL and NoSQL data stores
Basic knowledge of statistics
Interested candidates should submit electronic copy of their curriculum vitae, a cover letter describing their qualifications, relevant experience, career goals, and a sample of past programming work.
