The Division of Pulmonary (ZSFG) is now recruiting for an Assistant Professional Researcher. The main responsibility of this position will be to work with Dr. John Metcalfe on NIH-funded projects. The goals of these projects include advancing novel molecular M. tuberculosis tests (e.g., next-generation sequencing assays for rapid drug susceptibility testing that are scalable within high burden settings); optimizing sample preparation and sequencing library construction for M. tuberculosis; and elucidating host- and pathogen-specific determinants of M. tuberculosis latency, recrudescence, and transmission. In the context of these and related projects, specific responsibilities will be to advance and participate in M. tuberculosis microbiology and next-generation sequencing assay workflows and design, including but not limited to bench development and bioinformatics.

In addition, a portion of effort will be to work with Dr. Ernst on projects employing comparative bacterial genomics to identify and characterize mechanisms and targets of protective immunity in tuberculosis. Responsibilities will include analyses of bacterial population genome sequences and to characterize variants in the PPE and PE_PGRS families that exhibit evidence of diversifying selection in the presence compared with the absence of adaptive immune responses.

Required qualifications:
* Appointees in the Professional Research series must possess a doctorate or its equivalent.
* Biohazard Level 3 certified.
* Expertise in PCR and RT-PCR.
* Expertise in Mycobacterial, bacterial and yeast cell culture.
* Expertise in DNA and RNA isolation.
* Expertise in R and Python programming languages.
* Certification course in machine learning.

Preferred qualifications:
* Track record of independent research.
* Principal investigator for a grant.
* Completion of post-doctoral fellowship.
* MSc or equivalent in statistics.
