Overview

Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center is an independent, nonprofit, unified adult cancer care and research center that is clinically integrated with UW Medicine, a world leader in clinical care, research and learning. The first National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center in the Pacific Northwest, Fred Hutch's global leadership in bone marrow transplantation, HIV/AIDS prevention, immunotherapy, and COVID-19 vaccines has confirmed our reputation as one of the world's leading cancer, infectious disease and biomedical research centers. Based in Seattle, Fred Hutch operates eight clinical care sites that provide medical oncology, infusion, radiation, proton therapy, and related services, and network affiliations with hospitals in five states. The Silberstein lab is seeking to recruit a post-doctoral fellow who is interested in pursuing laboratory-based research project.

The main goal of the laboratory is to leverage the knowledge of hematopoietic stem cell biology and bone marrow microenvironment in order to develop new therapeutic approaches to promote normal HSC function in bone marrow failure and to prevent development of myeloid malignancies. For the details of our prior work, please see Silberstein et al, Cell Stem Cell 2016, Goncalves, Silberstein et al, Cell 2016).

Responsibilities

• The lab is part of a Stem Cell and Gene Therapy Program at the Fred Hutch and interacts closely with other laboratories within the Program (Kiem, Adair, Bernstein, Hadland, Doulatov, Lee) and those within Integrated Immunotherapy Research Center (Dudakov, Headley).
• There will be ample opportunities for data presentation and informal discussions.
• They will be encouraged to develop research ideas and branch out into more independent projects.
• Mentorship and support for post-doctoral fellowship applications will be provided.

Qualifications

• The candidate is expected to have a PhD and/or MD and a strong interest in stem cell research and commitment to basic/translational science in hematopoiesis.
• Background in cancer biology is not required but would be a bonus
• Willingness to work with murine models is essential
• Applications from trainee hematologists who are considering a laboratory-based research project are welcome
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required
