Position Summary:

The scientist filling this role will perform expert research and experimentation in the Kaelber lab and collaborating labs to understand the molecular and structural basis of viral infection using cutting-edge structural biology methods. This role provides academic support to Prof. Kaelber and other lab members and adds 'surge capacity' to the research programme for a period of definite duration (Summer through Winter semester; part-time). During this time, the scientist is expected to prepare one or more manuscripts for peer-review and publication.

Minimum Education and Experience:

Masters' degree or higher is required in a relevant field such as microbiology, molecular biology, bacteriology, virology, or molecular genetics.
This position requires a degree of independence in planning, executing, and interpreting experiments consistent with advanced educational training. Additionally, mentorship of junior students necessitates advanced educational training. The short term of this position necessitates substantial prior exposure to the particular field of study because of the compressed training cycle for the incoming scientist.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Expertise in bacteriophage propagation and purification is required.
Expertise with bioinformatics and computational biology is required.
Fluency in English and good communication skills is required. In particular, evidence of well-written peer-reviewed articles is required.

Equipment Utilized:

Bacteriological equipment, molecular biology equipment such as electroporators, incubators, transmission electron microscopes, scanning electron microscopes, ion beams, cryogenic optical microscope, ultracentrifuges, flames.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

The researcher must have good eyesight to interpret faint images in a microscope, and must possess sufficient manual dexterity to manipulate small, fragile electron microscopy grids under liquid nitrogen.
The work will be conducted indoors in an office-type environment (70%) & a chemical/biological laboratory environment (30%).
