Job Description: What We Are Looking For
The Raji Lab in the Department of Biology at Baylor University is seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Research Associate to join a growing research program at the interface of neurogenetics, sensory neuroscience, and mosquito behavior. The successful candidate will conduct independent and collaborative research to understand how mosquito sensory systems drive behaviors relevant to disease transmission, with the long-term goal of developing innovative strategies to reduce mosquito-borne diseases.
Half of the world's population is at risk for mosquito-borne diseases, and mosquitoes rely heavily on their sensory systems to locate hosts, mates, egg-laying sites, and sugar sources. The Raji Lab exploits this dependence to uncover the genetic, neural, and molecular mechanisms underlying mosquito behavior, particularly in Anopheles disease vectors.
The laboratory's research program aims to develop new genetic tools to study the neurobiology of mosquito behavior and identify genes and neural circuits that drive blood-feeding and other appetitive behaviors in malaria mosquitoes. To achieve these goals, the lab uses CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing, transcriptomics, neurophysiology, neuroanatomy, RNA in situ hybridization, functional imaging, and behavioral assays.
What You Will Do
Design, execute, and interpret independent research projects aligned with the lab's core aims
Develop and apply genetic, neurogenetic, and molecular tools in mosquitoes
Lead experiments involving CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing, transcriptomics, and functional genomics
Perform and analyze behavioral assays, neurophysiology, functional imaging, and neuroanatomical studies
Analyze complex datasets and integrate molecular, neural, and behavioral findings
Prepare manuscripts for peer-reviewed publication and present findings at national and international conferences
Contribute to the development of grant proposals and fellowship applications
Maintain rigorous experimental records and ensure reproducibility and data integrity
Mentor graduate and undergraduate researchers in experimental design and laboratory techniques
Collaborate with internal and external research partners
Perform other duties as assigned in support of Baylor University's mission
Comply with University policies, safety regulations, and responsible conduct of research standards
Required Qualifications
Ph.D. in Neuroscience, Biology, Genetics, Molecular Biology, Entomology, or a related field
Demonstrated ability to independently design and execute experiments
Strong background in one or more of the following areas: neurobiology, genetics, molecular biology, sensory biology, or behavior
Proven record of scientific productivity, including peer-reviewed publications or manuscripts in preparation
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with vector biology or insect model systems, particularly mosquitoes
Expertise in CRISPR-Cas9-based genome editing, transcriptomics, or functional imaging
Experience with behavioral neuroscience, neurophysiology, or circuit mapping
Interest in translational applications related to vector control or global health
Strong interest in mentorship and collaborative research
Competitive candidates for external postdoctoral fellowships
Application Materials
A complete application should include:
