The lab manager of the Proteomics lab within the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology is responsible for maintaining mechanical and electronic equipment in teaching and research labs, supporting faculty, post-docs, and training teaching assistants. It includes managing inventory, purchasing supplies, and maintaining technical manuals. The position collaborates on research projects, ensures lab safety compliance, and coordinates equipment maintenance. Additionally, the role liaises with university departments and promotes public relations for the department.
Required Qualifications::
Bachelor of Science
A thorough understanding of protein chemistry, including protein extraction, digestion, separation techniques, and mass spectrometry (MS) principles and operation.
Knowledgeable about various quantitative proteomics approaches and data analysis pipelines.
A strong foundation in molecular biology techniques is crucial, including nucleic acid extraction, PCR (various types like qPCR), gel electrophoresis, cloning, next-generation sequencing (NGS) principles and library preparation, and potentially cell culture techniques.
Ability to advise users on optimal experimental design for both proteomics and molecular biology projects to ensure robust and meaningful data.
A sharp analytical mind capable of diagnosing and resolving technical issues with instrumentation, protocols, and data analysis.
Experience in the operation, maintenance, and basic troubleshooting of complex analytical instruments (e.g., mass spectrometers, sequencers, PCR machines, centrifuges).
Proficiency in various software packages used for data acquisition, processing, analysis, and visualization in both proteomics and molecular biology. Familiarity with bioinformatics databases and tools is also essential.

Essential Functions and percent of time::
40% Maintain mechanical and electronic equipment in teaching labs. Support faculty and post-doc researchers, as well as train teaching assistants for labs. Committed to staying abreast of the latest technologies, methodologies, and best practices through literature review, conferences, and collaborations.
15% Maintain an up-to-date inventory of tools and supplies. Purchase consumables and other small orders for research and teaching labs. Maintain an up-to-date electronic and
paper-based library of technical manuals.
15% Serve as safety officer for MME Department. Work with Environmental Health and Safety Dept.(EHS) to maintain State-certified emission and radiation standards. Establish and implement safety standards to protect students, staff, faculty, and university. Instruct students on safe practices before allowing independent use of labs. Implement and maintain rigorous Quality Assurance and Quality Control procedures to ensure the reliability and reproducibility of core services. This includes developing standard operating procedures (SOPs) and monitoring performance metrics.
15% Collaborate with faculty and staff on funded research projects, including development of equipment design, acquisition, and machining for final system integration. Serve as departmental liaison with other university units, such as Physical Plant; Maintenance and Repair Shop; Machine Shop; and Custodial.
10% Coordinate equipment maintenance in research labs, such as materials characterization, additive manufacturing, wind tunnel, and all associated sample preparation equipment.
5% Promote numerous types of public relations activities for Department with high schools, incoming freshmen, donors, alumni, and media. Other duties as assigned.
