The individual chosen will be responsible for meeting the highest standards of customer service including, exhibiting a professional and positive image when interacting with patients, faculty and staff.
The Genetic Counseling Assistant will support the Cancer Genetics Clinic. The Genetic Counselor Assistant will assist the attending physicians and the genetic counselors with pre- and post-clinic work including the collection of personal and family history information, handling logistics for genetic testing, entering information in clinic databases, communicating with patients about personal health and family history information, and participating as needed in clinic case conferences. Personal integrity, confidentiality, ability to multi-task, prioritize and work constructively in a team setting are required qualities.
Preparing pedigrees in Progeny from family history forms prior to clinic and updating post-clinic, obtaining the medical history over the phone if needed
Data entry in designated databases in Excel, Progeny (pedigrees), and State of Michigan.
Scanning pedigrees, consents, and other documents into patient's electronic medical records (Michart).
Coordination of genetic testing including entering patient demographic and insurance information into lab portals and requisition forms, entering orders into MiChart and ascertaining test costs and billing options.
Tracking receipt of patients' consent forms, specimens to various laboratories and test results. Follow up with patients and laboratories as needed.
Preparing patient resource packets for the indication(s) they are being seen for.
High School diploma or an equivalent combination of education and experience is necessary.
General office practices, ability to understand medical documentation and general knowledge of genetics and medical terminology is required.
Demonstrated excellent verbal and written skills.
Candidate must be an active team player and be able to work independently.
Strong organizational and prioritization skills are required along with outstanding customer service skills.
Demonstrated record of excellent attendance.
Exhibits professional and positive image when interacting with patients, faculty, and staff.

Previous clerical/medical records experience in an outpatient clinical or research setting.
BS in Biology, Genetics, other science or degree in health field.
Proven track record of reliability in working with private health information and communicating with patients.
Working knowledge of Progeny, Excel, Word, and Michart
Flexible shifts available between 8:00AM-5:00PM M-F; Flexibility with both in-person and remote work
This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment.
