The Department of Microbiology invites applications for a full-time (1.00 FTE), 9-month, tenure-track/tenured Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor of Microbiology: Director of Aquatic Animal Health Lab position (depending on qualifications).
The primary responsibilities of this 9-month 1.0 FTE tenure track or tenured position are to direct the John Fryer Aquatic Animal Health Laboratory, establish and sustain an independent research program by conducting original research in an area of microbiology related to climate change and aquatic animal health through external funding, publishing original research in peer-reviewed journals, teaching and mentoring graduate, professional, and undergraduate students; and providing institutional and professional service including service related to interdisciplinary scholarship, student success, and diversity. We are especially interested in candidates with research programs focused on bacterial or viral impacts on aquatic animal health.
In addition to the 9-month 1.0 FTE position, the leadership role at the Aquatic Animal Health Laboratory continues through the summer months, and this is accounted for through a separate summer appointment.
The Microbiology faculty consists of 11 tenure-track professors, 7 senior research professors, 4 instructors, and 5 advisors, and trains about 950 undergraduate majors (Microbiology and BioHealth Sciences) and 40 graduate students (Microbiology). Research interests encompass studies in the biology and pathogenesis of bacteria and viruses, microbial ecology and evolution, bioinformatics, microbial interactions, and environmental microbiology. Typically requires PhD or terminal degree (Masters for some Extension positions and MLS for Library positions) and significant experience in teaching in a classroom, Extension, or other setting, and development of a research program in the academic discipline/unit.
Requirements :
Minimum/required qualifications for all ranks (Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor):
Ph.D. in Microbiology or related field.
Relevant postdoctoral or postgraduate experience.
Demonstrable proficiency or significant potential to obtain external research funding.
Demonstrated ability to contribute to scholarly activities through refereed publications in, or relevant to, microbiology.
Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate microbiology topics to varied audiences.
Evidence of teaching, engagement, or research efforts that minimize barriers or consider equity and inclusion concerns.
Tolerance for diverse ideas, including those different from one's own.
Minimum/required qualifications at the ranks of Associate or Full Professor:
Demonstrated ability for excellence and leadership in research
Demonstrated ability to attract external funding to sustain a vigorous research program.
This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.
