Job Summary:
The Genetic Counseling Manager is responsible for clinical and/or program management.
* Clinical management: responsible for consistent and high-quality patient care delivery in the practice; continual assessment of clinical operations to ensure quality and coordination of care; supervision and mentorship of staff; and optimization of the operations of the clinical practice.
* Program management: responsible for the oversight of one or more clinical programs, including management of clinical teams to achieve successful operations of programs. Management and administrative responsibilities should account for 30% to 50% of daily activity.
The Manager will also provide direct genetic counseling services and care coordination, with an expert application of knowledge and skills in complex situations and provide formal mentorship and education, in addition to supervision of more junior staff.
Give feedback to physicians and leadership on issues regarding the operations, regulations, quality improvement and other issues impacting clinical practice.
The Manager is expected to have developed one or more areas of high-level expertise and to employ this knowledge in clinical practice and in mentorship of more junior GCs. Professional activities should include those that have an impact beyond the clinic, for example, in one or more other Departments or across the health system; within the local community; or on a national scale through presentations and publications.

Leadership (applicable for program management roles):
* Oversees clinical operations in the practice including budgeting (where applicable), clinical project management, operational planning, quality, regulatory compliance and continuous improvement initiatives
* Ensures consistent and comprehensive patient care delivery and be responsible for continually assessing the clinical care team to ensure quality, coordination of care, supervision and mentorship of staff, and general operations of the clinical genetic counseling practice.
* Supports the Division/Department in performing the project management, reporting and data collection and assignment of duties essential to improving clinical performance of one or more genetic counseling programs.
* Performs essential operational and administrative duties including organizing meetings, identifying stakeholders, coordinating process improvement projects, and identifying and addressing issues related to the advancement of the program
Clinical responsibilities include:
* Prepares for cases by identifying relevant medical records and ensuring that these are obtained
* Collects and evaluates patient medical history, construct a pedigree using appropriate nomenclature
* Performs comprehensive genetic risk assessment, explain natural history of diagnosis, explain relevant genetic factors, explain available testing and facilitate testing
* Interprets genetic test results and communicates to patients and other healthcare professionals.
* Performs psychosocial assessment and provides counseling
* Documents clinical encounters.
* Writes clinic notes, physician letters, patient letters and other communications
Perform high-level clinical genetic counseling:
* Demonstrates proficiency and autonomy in managing complex, cross disease center projects including analysis and interpretation of high-level results o Utilize emerging technologies that may affect clinical care
* Develops patient education methods to enhance communication effectiveness with patients
* Utilizing advanced genetic counseling methods, facilitates patient decision-making and other patient goals
* Ensures continuity of care within the clinical unit
Quality improvement:
* Identifies strategies to increase clinical efficiency
* Recognizes areas for improvement within the clinic and implements strategies for process improvement (such as EMR optimization)
* Identifies opportunities for outreach to expand genetic services
* Genetic counselors are encouraged and expected to participate in a diverse set of professional activities related to clinical supervision, research and/or leadership.
Demonstrate an interest in growth through participation in professional activities. Some of these may include:
* Provides educational lectures to advance understanding of genetics at Penn
* Develops and facilitates patient support groups, organize patient education seminars and conferences and create patient materials
* Represents Penn in genetics-related community outreach activities o If research focused, assists with grant proposal and submissions, write abstracts and manuscripts, coordinates research studies
* Submits abstracts or gives presentation at major genetics/national meetings and/or submit manuscripts for publication
Requirements:
* Genetic Counselor license
* PA State Licensure
* Master of Arts or Science
* ACGC accredited genetic counseling training program
* 5+ years of relevant experience as a genetic counselor required, including at least 3 years prior people/program management experience in a healthcare setting
* Demonstrated competency as a skilled care provider able to manage complex cases with independence and with evidence of strong knowledge in at least one area of clinical practice
