The Warren Lab (in the Department of Biology at Saint Louis University is seeking a postdoctoral research associate to join our team seeking to reveal the physiological mechanisms that enable animals to survive severe hypoxia and anoxia. This position is funded by a recent grant from the National Science Foundation (award #2421029) to carry-out studies of neurophysiological function and gene expression in the brain of anoxic turtles. Our lab has recently succeeded in culturing primary neurons from the cerebrocortex of turtles and demonstrated they possess a functional neuronal phenotype. The person hired to fill this position will lead studies of the membrane properties of these isolated neurons in response to anoxia using whole-cell patch-clamp recording techniques.
The Warren Lab is one of many that form part of a vibrant community of neuroscience researchers within Saint Louis Universitys Institute for Translational Neuroscience. The St. Louis region is also home to many academic and industrial leaders in the fields of neuroscience and physiology. The position will include travel to conferences and the formation of collaborations with researchers at the University of Toronto and Aarhus University.
Professor Warren is invested in the current and future success of the postdoctoral associate and, with them, will formulate a mentoring plan tailored to their careers upon their arrival. This will include weekly meetings and funding for conference travel.
Essential functions of the position will include:
1. Conducting and reporting on the research described in the grant proposal.
2. Preparing and submitting papers stemming from the research.
3. Assisting in the design of research experiments.Â
4. Conscientious discharging of his/her/their research responsibilities.
6. Maintaining conformity with ethical standards in research.
7. Maintaining compliance with good laboratory practice including the maintenance of adequate research records.
8. Engaging in open and timely discussion with his/her mentor regarding possession or distribution of material, reagents, or records belonging to their laboratory and any proposed disclosure of findings or techniques privately or in publications.
9. Collegial conduct towards co-trainees, staff members and members of the research group.
10. Adherence to all applicable University policies, procedures and regulations. All data, research records and materials and other intellectual property generated in Saint Louis University laboratories remain the property of Saint Louis University.
11. Incorporating undergraduates into their research activities.
12. Participating in the laboratories outreach activities with the public and local middle school students.
Required Qualifications: Ph.D., M.D., D.V.M. or equivalent, with previous experience in comparative, cardiovascular, muscle or renal physiology or in neurophysiology or neuroscience. Candidates must have a demonstrated publication record. Â
Minimum Qualifications:Â See Required Qualifications
Skills and abilities:Â The most competitive applicants will have prior experience recording membrane currents using whole-cell patch clamping techniques, especially in excitable cells. The applicant should possess basic laboratory and molecular biology skills.
This position is budgeted at an annual salary of $59,000 plus full benefits.
