The Department of Neurology at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California (USC) seeks a full-time Genetic Counselor. The incumbent will counsel individuals and families in clinical settings for various neurological indications (e.g., autosomal dominant Alzheimers disease, other genetic risks for Alzheimers, Huntingtons disease, motor neuron disease, muscular dystrophy, epilepsy, ataxia, and other hereditary cancer conditions). They will conduct patient intake for risk assessments, provide up-to- date data on syndrome probability, tests, and options for affected individuals (e.g., medical and psychosocial implications of genetic testing). They will 1) review inheritance modes and presents risk data based on pedigree analysis. Formulates differential diagnoses and conducts risk and mutation probability analyses, 2) discuss testing strategies to refine genetic risk (e.g., multigene panel testing), 3) selects, facilitate, and interpret tests in context of pedigree analysis. Identifies family members at risk and coordinates cascade testing as needed.
The counselor will 1) provides accurate and complete interpretations of test findings to patients and providers, 2) explain types of genetic variants to help ensure appropriate integration of results into medical care. Discusses care options and follows up as needed, 3) formulate strategies for managing and coping with risk of neurological disease, 4) provides support for patients in crises, helping them obtain needed resources (e.g., social workers, psychiatrists), 5) document genetic counseling, testing and follow up, 6) Coordinate referrals for internal/external specialists.
The counselor will 1) provide education as needed (e.g., lectures, mentoring residents, fellows), serving as an instructor for practicing staff/physicians, 2) provides mentorship to interns, 3) develop educational materials and provides lectures to lay/community audiences.
They will serve as a member of research teams, obtaining informed consent for participants to join studies and research efforts. They will provide team support, compiling data for committee reports and completing administrative tasks as needed.
The annual base salary range for this position is $83,000-$120,000. When extending an offer of employment, the University of Southern California considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidates work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, federal, state, and local laws, contractual stipulations, grant funding, as well as external market and organizational considerations.
