A reasonable estimate for this position is $53,100 - $68,300.

Position duration: Initial appointment will be for one year, with the possibility of reappointment. Should the hiring unit propose reappointment; a review to assess performance will be conducted. Reappointment is also contingent upon the availability of funding.

Position Description
This position will focus on research methodologies into the applications of machine learning and deep learning to genomics. The position will involve maintaining and updating existing code bases and acquiring and processing genomic datasets.
The hiring unit, within the Biomolecular Engineering Department at UCSC focuses on research and education at the intersection of biology, computer science, and engineering, to drive advances in areas such as genomics, synthetic biology, bioinformatics, and biomolecular modeling.
Under the direction of Assistant Professor Ioannids, the research specialist will contribute towards genomic data production and analysis, Drosophila maintenance, and Wolbachia and Drosophila candidate gene testing through confocal imaging and cytological analysis.
An ideal candidate would have general knowledge in molecular biology, genetics, genomics, cell biology, developmental biology, and bioinformatics (e.g., bash, python, common bioinformatics software for short read alignment and analysis).
Special consideration will be given to candidates with any of the following areas of expertise:
Hands-on wet-lab expertise in plate-scale Illumina library preparation with Tn5 transposase, Drosophila genetic crosses, and Drosophila ovary dissection and preparation for confocal imaging.
Dry-lab expertise in short-read alignment and python pipeline use, as well as image analysis in ImageJ/FIJI.
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
Experience with programming, machine learning, and deep learning with applications to genomics. Your application must document your experience in these areas.
Bachelor's degree (or equivalent foreign degree) in biomolecular engineering or a field relevant to the advertised position. It is expected that the degree requirement will be completed by June 30, 2024.
