The Genetic Counselor Assistant will be focused on the support of the Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory that performs genetic testing for patients. The Genetic Counselor Assistant will be involved in duties such as supporting test orders through the process, completing forms, coordinating sample collection, submitting requests to insurance companies, working with laboratory and clinical genetic counselors, laboratory directors, physicians, financial clearance and insurance on prior authorizations, appeals and denials, as well as tracking test results. Additional administrative duties will include organizing and/or developing clinical and financial resources to support test reimbursement, organizing meetings and assisting with events. Advanced organizational skills, familiarity with Microsoft office, effective time management, and attention to detail are required. Familiarity with basic medical terminology is preferred. Applicants must be able to work independently in a fast-paced environment, be motivated to learn, and recognize and communicate their own limitations effectively. The ideal candidate should have excellent interpersonal skills and a collaborative attitude. Prior experience in the field is desired. The position is on person / on site.
The Children's National Division of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine is a key resource for genetic testing for the Genetics and Metabolism Department as well as over clinical services at the hospital. The hospital serves as a clinical rotation site for multiple Genetic Counseling Programs and is integrally involved in the training of medical students, residents, and fellows. The Genetic Counselor Assistant will work directly with laboratory directors, laboratory and clinical genetic counselors while gaining valuable experience in the field of genetics.
