The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (BMB) at the University of Nevada Reno, a distinguished Carnegie R1 institution, invites applications for the position of Department Chair. This position will be at the tenured rank of Associate or Full Professor.
The Department (BMB) is housed in the College of Agriculture, Biotechnology and Natural Resources (CABNR). BMB has 19 full-time faculty members who direct annual research expenditures exceeding two million dollars in sub-disciplines including bioinformatics, biotechnology, biochemistry, metabolic engineering, and cell signaling. Most faculty members have partial appointments with the Nevada Agricultural Experiment Station. BMB currently serves 311 undergraduate and 33 graduate students with B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, as well as B.S. and M.S. degrees in Biotechnology.
The chair is expected to recognize the importance of recruiting a diverse student body to strengthen the department. The hiring committee will also consider the ability to represent departmental interests in interdisciplinary settings and to develop and implement a shared departmental vision. Important focus areas include promoting sponsored research activities, including programmatic grants; encouraging collaborative intra- and inter-departmental interactions; developing diversity among students and employees; enabling innovation in teaching, including modernizing the curriculum; and committing to faculty development and advancement, including mentoring. Familiarity with the biotechnology industry is an advantage.
PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology or a closely related discipline
A record of sustained excellence in biochemical or molecular biology research, preferably in human health
A record of strong commitment to undergraduate and graduate education
A record of effective administration in an academic or research setting
