DESCRIPTION
Incumbent will assist Principal Investigator (PI) in research on chromatin dynamics and gene expression by using research techniques such as PCR, DNA/RNA isolation and sequencing, gel electrophoresis, DNA cloning, and bioinformatic analysis of genome-wide data. This work involves mammalian cell culture, gene editing techniques such as with CRISPR-Cas9, and genome-wide analyses such as RNA-seq, ATAC-seq and related methods.
Other duties include the following: provide work direction to undergraduate employees, general upkeep of lab common areas, and proper disposal and storage of biohazardous waste. In addition, incumbent will participate in the publication of scientific manuscripts based on experiments performed, when appropriate. Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Theoretical understanding of cell and molecular biology; BS in biochemistry or molecular biology OR an equivalent combination of education and laboratory experience.
Experience with the following molecular biology techniques: PCR, RNA and DNA isolation and sequencing, gel electrophoresis, column chromatography, DNA cloning, growth and transformation of bacteria, etc. with the ability to carry out a variety of technical procedures with minimal instruction or supervision.
Ability to perform mammalian cell culture.
Ability to perform gene editing by using CRISPR-Cas9 and related techniques
Ability to perform genome-wide analyses such as RNA-seq, ATAC-seq, and ChIP-seq
Ability to perform computational analysis of genome-wide data and other datasets by using bioinformatic tools such as R.
Experience with basic laboratory equipment such as pipetting devices, centrifuges, electrophoresis equipment, balances, pH meters, spectrophotometers, dishwashers, autoclaves. Skill, ability and willingness to learn new laboratory techniques and use of new lab equipment as needed.
Demonstrated skill with sterile technique and preparing buffer solutions. and preparing and handling proteins and nucleic acids.
Experience to perform mathematical calculations including computing molarities, pH's, etc.
Ability to maintain confidentiality in matters related to work.
Demonstrated ability to work independently or collaboratively on a research project. Ability to maintain a high level of motivation to contribute to cutting edge research, and seek and learn new experimental methods as required.
Demonstrated successful, positive interpersonal oral and written communication skills using tact, diplomacy, discretion, and flexibility with diverse personalities and situations. Skill to interact effectively with faculty, academics, students, and staff including those of diverse ethnicity, culture, and foreign nationals.
Demonstrated skills to read and follow established lab protocols and work effectively with minimal instruction.
Demonstrated ability to provide work direction to undergraduate student lab employees. Skill to train others in various lab techniques and procedures (safety precautions, preparation of media, dishwashing, equipment usage, laboratory maintenance, etc).
Experience and skill with MS Office programs, Adobe Photoshop, spreadsheet, and other computer software; willingness and ability to update and increase PC skills and knowledge as needed.
Knowledge/understanding and at least some experience with Safety Data Sheets, hazard communication and Injury and Illness Prevention Program. Familiarity with a Chemical Hygiene Plan addressing safety precautions including appropriate clothing and shoes, safe handling of chemicals, use of protective items. Willingness and ability to keep safety training current and consistent with research involvement.
Demonstrated excellent organizational skills including ability to keep clear and accurate records, organize a varied workload, and give oral presentations on the progress of research.
Knowledge of library databases such as PubMed to locate journal articles electronically and in print.
Willingness and demonstrated ability to embrace and consistently uphold the principles of community for a collaborative work environment.
