We approach scientific problems from fresh angles using creative interdisciplinary approaches while drawing on our departmental strengths in the core sciences. MCS faculty members are nationally and internationally recognized for their research in a variety of fields, including polymer science, cosmology, mathematical finance, and neuroscience.
The Department of Biological Sciences within the Mellon College of Science is seeking a full-time Research Associate I to work in the laboratory of Dr. Liz Ransey. The Ransey Lab explores the structure and functions of gap junctions, vital cell signaling channels implicated in diseases like cancer. Our focus is on characterizing and reengineering connexin proteins - the main structural components of these junctions. We aim to use these insights to develop innovative probes and therapeutic devices. We seek a highly motivated individual with strong organizational and interpersonal skills to complete guided experiments and assist with the day-to-day operations in the lab.
Your responsibilities will include:

- Crafting research experiments and generating novel protocols.
- Analyzing data, preparing presentations, and writing technical reports.
- Compliance with chemical and laboratory safety guidelines.
- Maintaining and ordering lab supplies.
Flexibility, excellence, and passion are vital qualities within MCS. Inclusion, collaboration, and cultural sensitivity are valued proficiencies at CMU. Therefore, we are in search of a team member who can optimally and expertly interact with a varied population of internal and external partners. We are looking for someone who shares our values and who will support the mission of the university through their work.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in biology, biochemistry, or related field is required.
- 1-3 years research experience.
- Prior wet lab experience in molecular biology.
- Previous experience with mammalian tissue culture strongly preferred.
- The ideal candidate is responsible, growth-minded, and able to work well independently within a team environment.
- Additionally, the ideal candidate is enthusiastic about learning and excited about opportunities to expand their training and skillset to numerous complementary disciplines, such as structural biology, computational biology, and neuroscience.
