SCHOOL/UNIT DESCRIPTION: Sarafan ChEM-H is a new interdisciplinary institute focused on connecting Chemistry, Engineering, and Medicine for Human Health. The institute was founded as a joint venture of the Schools of Medicine, Engineering, and Humanities and Sciences. The Innovative Medicines Accelerator (IMA) emerged out of Stanford's Long Range Vision and seeks to accelerate the translation of Stanford research discoveries into new medicines while expanding our knowledge of human biology. Part of the Drug and Vaccine Prototyping arm of the IMA, the Cell and Gene Therapies portfolio focuses on supporting novel therapeutic development in these research areas through annual seed grant opportunities and internal and external partnerships.

POSITION SUMMARY: The Innovative Medicines Accelerator (IMA) / Sarafan ChEM-H is seeking a highly motivated Research Scientist, Protein Biochemistry with deep expertise in AKTA based protein purification, preferably Adeno Associated Viral (AAV) vectors. Our goal is to take advantage of the tremendous promise of AAV vectors in treating rare genetic disorders. As such, they will be responsible for manufacturing novel AAV vectors for a diverse portfolio at the IMA. Primary duties will be to take full responsibility for all AAV production and quality control assays. Additional duties include operation and maintenance of equipment associated with AAV production, and with opportunities to implement new technologies for process optimization. Candidates should have strong organizational skills and be coordinated and methodical in their scientific approach. Ideally, they are excellent team players, self-motivated, comfortable with autonomy, and embrace opportunities to tackle new problems and challenges as part of a dynamic team in a start-up-like environment within the University. Emphasis is placed on communicative teamwork, while also being able to take initiative and work independently. Expertise in molecular biology techniques like dd-PCR, DNA/protein gels etc. is highly preferred.
CORE DUTIES:
Support scientific and research programs related to the area of cell and gene therapy; analyze data, monitor and oversee experimental processes, and design and develop prototypes, specialized equipment, and/or systems.
Plan and execute various phases of AAV vector production operation, oversee schedule of key operational equipment, and supervise their routine maintenance.
Acquire and maintain tools, equipment, and chemicals associated with vector production and quality control.
Maintain documentation related to research studies and protocols, and perform administrative duties related to equipment and systems associated with research or engineering projects, as assigned.
Liaise between cell & gene therapy and IMA members and serve as a resource for AAV production and quality control.
Routinely carry out molecular biology techniques like dd-PCR, DNA/protein gels.
Routine aseptic handling of AAV production cells and other cell lines as required.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Education & Experience: Associate degree or certificate of completion in a related engineering or related scientific discipline, or three years of equivalent work experience or combination of education and relevant experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Experience applying scientific and engineering principles and practices to perform technical services and support.
Experience with data analysis, experimental process, design, and development of prototypes, equipment, and/or systems related to AAV vector production and purification.
Ability to write clear documentation, perform administrative duties, and research protocol maintenance related to research studies and/or scientific projects.
Experience with software applications, systems, or programs relevant for the job.
Ability to interpret and determine validity of data and check own work.
Ability to communicate, liaise, and work with IMA staff.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
A bachelor's degree with 4+ years or a Master's degree with 2+ years or a PhD with 0-2 years experience in academia and/or industry experience in protein purification.
Experience in AAV gene therapy discovery research is highly preferred.
Extensive knowledge in AKTA protein purification system.
Ability to handle aseptic cell culture and basic molecular biology tools like PCR and gels.
Ability to prioritize own work and multi-task.
Demonstrated ability to take initiative and ownership of research processes.
Ability to routinely and independently exercise sound judgment in making decisions.
Experience working independently and as part of a team.
Ability to work with project management tools.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:
Frequently grasp lightly/fine manipulation, perform desk-based computer tasks, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
Occasionally stand/walk, sit, twist/bend/stoop/squat, grasp forcefully.

The expected pay range for this position is $78,000 to $113,000 per annum. Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
