Position Summary:
The Research Translation Group within UCI Beall Applied Innovation manages all UCI-owned IP, including drafting and negotiating agreements (from non-disclosure agreements to exclusive licenses) and coordinating the support structure necessary for the commercial success of UCI's research results, discoveries, and inventions. UCI Beall Applied Innovation's (BAI) engages its collaborative teams, including the Research Translation Group (traditional technology transfer office), Industry Sponsored Research Group, Enterprise Collaboration Group, and New Ventures Group, with the responsibility of enabling industry access to UCI-developed knowledge and research results, for the public benefit and improving lives. UCI Beall Applied Innovation staff actively partners with the UCI researcher community and industry to facilitate the movement of UCI-developed knowledge and discoveries into products and services. The three top-level aims driving the objectives and activity of the UCI BAI staff members are to cultivate a Use-inspired Research Culture, incorporate Actionable Market and Business Intelligence in decision-making, ensure Cadence of Business & apply Deal-Making Expertise for business transactions.
The Senior Licensing Officer will be critical in cultivating, managing, and stewarding the commercialization of UCI's life sciences technology and research portfolio. The life sciences portfolio includes university-developed research, discoveries, and inventions at various stages of development, from conception to commercialization. The successful incumbent will develop and manage strong relationships with faculty and industry partners. This person will apply a blend of technical, business, legal, and entrepreneurial knowledge to successfully manage UCI's intellectual property, including developing and implementing specific marketing strategies for each technology.

4+ years of independent licensing experience within the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, cell and/or gene therapy, and/or diagnostic sectors or commensurate combination of relevant degrees and experience in academic and industry settings.
Advanced degree Ph.D., MBA and/or J.D required Bachelor's degree in life sciences
Proven ability to review and evaluate inventions for patentability (including prior art and freedom to operate).
Knowledge of product development in the life science area.
Experience with start-ups, especially legal aspects.
Demonstrated success in negotiation, deal structuring, and closing. Demonstrated ability to independently manage and solve problems in challenging situations with limited supervision.
Be comfortable with ambiguity and organizational change in continually evolving processes and systems.
Significant experience and dependable ability in marketing new technologies to industrial partners; ability to perform market research and business analysis and guide strategic marketing efforts.
Thorough knowledge of and application of standard principles, practices, laws, and regulations pertaining to the protection and management of intellectual property, university technology transfer, and general scientific and/or technical skills in subject matter areas.
Demonstrated curiosity, experimentation, and collaboration skills.
Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize diverse and time-sensitive tasks.
Preferred:
Prior experience interacting with venture capitalists and angel investors is a plus.
