Duties: This position includes duties related to managing a combined molecular-microbiology laboratory, including: --maintenance of laboratory records --inventory management --purchasing --SOP development --sample submission and tracking --QC of laboratory processes
Other duties include routine sample processing, e.g.,: --DNA/RNA extraction --library preparation for shotgun metagenomic, targeted and 16S rRNA next-generation sequencing --qPCR --culture and isolation for various bacterial taxa --functional assays --antimicrobial susceptibility testing --QC for all steps of molecular and microbiological protocols
Other duties include novel assay development and advanced laboratory techniques, which will be determined by ongoing projects and needs within the lab group. These duties will require creativity, critical thinking, persistence and high-level troubleshooting.
Duties will also include a training/mentoring component: --comprehensive laboratory training of all incoming laboratory personnel --management of undergraduate students through the UMN UROP program --support of student projects, including both routine and non-routine sample processing --maintenance of training records --development of tests and procedures to ensure thorough training of all personnel as part of a comprehensive QC program
Effort: 50% of time will be spent in the lab: --routine sample processing --assay development --advanced molecular techniques
25% of time will be spent on lab-related administrative tasks, including: --maintenance of laboratory records --inventory management --purchasing --SOP development
25% of time will be spent training other laboratory personnel, including undergraduate and graduate students

Required Qualifications: --BS/BA and 4 years experience working in a laboratory setting or Master's degree and two years of related experience --High-level problem solving and critical thinking skills --Ability to work independently yet collaboratively --Strong work ethic with demonstrated productivity --Solid writing and communication skills --Demonstrated experience managing a diverse team and a diverse portfolio of activities --Desire to progress rapidly and to take ownership of teams, tasks and projects --Demonstrated ability to identify challenges and to develop and implement solutions for overcoming them
Preferred Qualifications: --At least 2 years experience with molecular biological techniques including qPCR, DNA/RNA extraction, and library preparation for next-generation sequencing (including QC) --At least 2 years experience with traditional microbiological techniques including bacterial culture and antimicrobial susceptibility testing --At least 2 first-author publications in peer-reviewed, scientific journals --Coursework and/or hands-on experience in statistical analysis --Experience with bioinformatics and/or computer programming
