Departmental Overview
The College of Computing, Data Science, and Society (CDSS) is a dynamic, innovative new college at UC Berkeley that represents a once-in-a-generation transformation. The College brings together faculty, researchers, staff and students from computing, statistics, the humanities, and social and natural sciences, mirroring the cross-cutting nature of data science and redefining the research university for the digital age. Core to the College is a commitment to examining how the digital revolution affects equity and opportunity-and building the capacity to respond to these challenges.
CDSS was created to meet the opportunities and demands of a world where data, machine learning, and artificial intelligence inform practice and policy in virtually every arena. The College connects the Data Science Undergraduate Studies program, Department of Electrical Engineering & Computer Sciences, Department of Statistics, the Berkeley Institute for Data Science, Berkeley D-Lab, Computational Precision Heath, and the Center for Computational Biology.
The College is responsible for growing Berkeley's broad-based undergraduate programs in data science, computing, statistics and other interdisciplinary programs, including classes and programs serving thousands of undergraduate students a year.
The Associate Director, Donor Relations will help the CDSS development team ensure that donor- and volunteer-facing programs run smoothly with the intended impact. This role is pivotal to creating and designing stewardship materials and gift proposals through knowledge of donor/volunteer interests and awareness of CDSS priorities. In addition to helping with briefings and facilitating/arranging for campus, off campus, and international visits with high level leaders, the position will regularly create high touch stewardship reports, custom gift proposals on key priorities/opportunities, giving program materials, custom visit schedules, event invitations/programs, and other donor materials which will involve interfacing with senior academic and administrative leaders across Berkeley, creating opportunities for future career growth within development, alumni relations, and communications.

50%Stewardship, Writing, and Strategic Communication
As a member of the Donor Relations team within CDSS, serve as partner to the CDSS Executive Director of Development and the CDSS Senior Assistant Dean of Development, as well as to campus development officers and leaders in prospect advancement.
Write and edit a range of high-quality, custom materials to advance and engage relationships with high-level prospects/donors through individual and program strategies, attending closely to donors' interests and perspectives.
Partner with colleagues across CDSS/UDAR and campus to draft and/or project-manage creating stewardship reports to deepen donor relationships. Stewardship of several existing donors who have made gifts in the $5 to $10 million plus range as well as regularly creating gift proposals to secure gifts in the $1M and above range.
Analyze and synthesize knowledge on donors and CDSS and campus priorities/initiatives to prepare prospect briefings for key academic and staff leaders across campus. Work closely with CDSS development leaders and team members, CDSS faculty and staff leaders on stewardship and communications needs related to donor-engagement, including but not limited to partnering with the CDSS Communications and UDAR teams on correspondence and the development of collateral and other materials.
Works as a partner across departments and programs in office in facilitating donor engagement and use of donor gift funds. Ensures a historical record of materials and collateral in order to provide high quality stewardship and program/communications strategies to deepen donor and volunteer engagement and expand philanthropic support overall.
As a member of the development team, continuously improve and develop processes that support the donor experience at the highest level. Draft/contribute to development of proposals, giving program materials, and draft correspondence on behalf of key CDSS and campus leaders. Engage collaboration of colleagues throughout CDSS/UDAR and campus.
35% Campus Visits and Supporting US and International Trips
Campus Visits and Supporting US and International trips In consultation with the ED and the Senior Assistant Dean as well as CDSS team members and campus partners, plan/choreograph, and help facilitate and execute prospect/donor visits that advance CDSS strategies for high end prospects and donors, involving senior development staff, faculty and academic leaders, including research and support of international trips by CDSS leaders.
Manage visit follow-up, including advancing proposals to successful conclusion, which will include interacting directly with key alums, parents, friends, donors/volunteers, international donors. May interact directly with prospects/donors and their respective teams in person or through written communication, as needed.
10% Special Projects
Serve as point person/partner for special projects deemed strategic for advancing CDSS development goals and prospect strategies: for example, creating and maintaining profiles for top prospects.
Lead research/analysis efforts to ensure optimal operational strategies for establishing gift funds (non-restrictive and restrictive) and spending gift funds for quality donor stewardship, including philanthropic allocation funds.
5% Professional Development and Growth
Engages in opportunities for training, workshops, seminars, pertinent to the position.
Required Qualifications
Strong analytical and critical thinking skills; ability to think strategically about donor engagement and stewardship at the highest level.
Excellent writing and research skills, including ability to track gift funds and make complex information clear and accessible for multiple audiences and shape it for specific purposes; logical and readable organization; proficiency with grammar, syntax, style and punctuation.
Excellent organizational skills; attention to detail and follow-through.
Strong, demonstrated growth mindset and flexibility to work as a member of a high-performing, highly collaborative team of development professionals.
Strong oral and interpersonal communications skills, including political acumen and active listening, to build and maintain effective working relationships at all organizational levels within CDSS and across the campus.

Knowledge of fundraising, stewardship, and donor relations concepts, principles, and practices.
Knowledge of/experience with conducting research and analysis through databases/online information systems.
Proficiency with Google suite and MS Office suite including working knowledge of and/or can quickly learn the Google software suite, spreadsheets, CRM, and databases. Training available.
Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge of and/or ability to learn the UC Berkeley campus and/or experience in a complex, multi-disciplinary environment.
Proficiency/interest in event planning and execution (for donor visits and small gatherings).

This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.
The budgeted salary that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $85,800 - $108,500, not to exceed $158,200 (grade 23).
