Summary

The simulation operations specialist is responsible for the implementation and delivery of simulation-based education (SBE) activities as an integral component of health professions education at the MGH Institute of Health Professions (IHP). Primary responsibilities include overseeing daily operations of the simulation spaces serving various departments within the IHP's School of Nursing, School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, and School of Healthcare Leadership. This individual will be responsible for all operational elements supporting SBE activities from consulting on scenario planning, preparing physical space and equipment, ensuring video capture, providing technical support, and participating in simulations as needed. Duties will be performed throughout the various simulation spaces across campus using in-person, hybrid, and/or virtual modalities.

Duties and Responsibilities

Administrative (30%):

• Coordinate with the Registrar, Simulated Participant Program, and Clinical Learning Lab teams to manage scheduling, facility reservations, and equipment and staffing needs for SBE activities.
• Develop and maintain dashboards for the IHP community to align efforts and build efficiency into SBE activities.
• Manage correspondence and respond to inquiries for the Simulation Lab.
• Manage inventory and ordering of supplies for SBE activities, including accurate cost allocations to the respective training program or unit.
• Act as primary contact for all simulation equipment vendors as well as external groups seeking support/services from IHP for SBE activities.
• Organize, update, and disseminate simulation scenarios with setup guidelines and teaching resources for faculty and staff.
• Electronically organize, store, and audit reference materials, equipment specifications, maintenance agreements, and warranties.
• Utilize SBE resources effectively and efficiently across departments and units.
• Produce annual (or more frequent) utilization reports of disposables and equipment to improve efficiency and inform resource planning.
• Research and place purchase requests for new technologies, as needed.
• Provide orientation to relevant groups to simulation principles, procedures, equipment, safety practices, and facilities.
• Participate in IHP-wide committees and initiatives pertaining to SBE and teaching innovation.

Technology operations, repairs, maintenance (40%):

• Prior to SBE activity, set-up space as specified in the simulation design template, ensuring technology (manikins and software) is functional and ready for the scheduled activity.
• Procure and apply moulage to standardized patients and simulators.
• During live simulations, operate SBE-equipment and software.
• Break down equipment and return space to baseline state after the end of SBE activities.
• Operate various simulation technologies including anatomic models, task trainers, high fidelity computer-based simulators, and virtual reality-based simulators.
• Regularly maintain software and equipment within warranty guidelines.
• Manage supplemental technologies to record simulations, manage case information, collect faculty and participant evaluations, track learner hours, and report on utilization.
• Provide first-line audiovisual technical support for computer-based multimedia systems and components, troubleshoot and/or escalate complex issues to the IHP Information Technology team.
• Assist faculty with setting up live AV viewing of simulations using SimulationIQ software.
• Troubleshoot technological issues with simulation-equipment, manikins, and accompanying computers/tablets.
• Coordinate with IHP Information Technology to manage technology issues related to simulation-based equipment.
• Maintain technology issues log.
• Update IHP faculty and staff on the status of open Help Desk tickets.
• Work to close tickets by maintaining communication with IT about unresolved issues.

Education (30%):

• Support simulation best-practice training for faculty, staff, and graduate/teaching assistants, including simulation safety standards and simulation equipment use, including manikins, and computer applications.
• Collaborate with faculty in the development and implementation of scenarios, including offering recommendations for improving simulation design and implementation processes and appropriate equipment selection for the educational objectives.
• Develop efficient processes and innovative solutions to address SBE needs of faculty and learners.
• Participate in live simulations, as a confederate, simulated participant, or operations controller.
• Identify and share latest trends in simulation and technology practices.
• Develop written and/or digital guides to support a user's independent ability to use manikins, task trainers, and other high-fidelity equipment.

Qualifications
Qualifications

• Associate degree in a health professions field or equivalent experience in a related field. Bachelor's degree preferred.
• Professional background in healthcare and simulation technology
• Experience with managing simulation-based technology for teaching and learning, ideally related to health professions education and/or health care delivery.
• Experience with simulation-based education and training, patient safety, and implementation of innovative simulation-based education and training programs, or an equivalent combination of training and experience
• Certified Healthcare Simulation Operations Specialist (CHSOS) or Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator (CHSE) is preferred

• Able to prioritize and effectively allocate time and resources to move projects and initiatives to completion.
• Manages conflict effectively in interactions related to simulation-based learning activities.
• Maintains and continues to develop familiarity and technical expertise in use and maintenance of simulation equipment.
• Able to learn new software and hardware quickly and independently.
• Knowledge of medical terminology and human anatomy/physiology
• Self-directed learner with interest in continuing to develop professional knowledge, skills, and competencies in simulation operations and education.

Budget responsibility

• Participate in budget planning and oversight of expenses.
