The Lazzaro Lab in the Department of Entomology seeks a full-time research technician to conduct generally supervised research on the genetics and endocrine regulation of insect immune responses. The focus of research will be bacterial infection in the model insect, Drosophila melanogaster.
While position responsibilities vary, every member of our community is expected to foster a culture of belonging and a psychologically healthy work environment by communicating across differences; being cooperative, collaborative, open, and welcoming; showing respect, compassion, and empathy; engaging and supporting others regardless of background or perspective; speaking up when others are being excluded or treated inappropriately; and supporting work/life integration of oneself and others.
Specific responsibilities will include Drosophila stock maintenance, designing and setting up Drosophila genetic crosses, culturing bacteria using standard microbiological techniques, infection of live Drosophila with bacteria, assaying Drosophila physiological traits (including survival and egg laying assays), and a variety of common molecular biology techniques that may include PCR, RT-qPCR, Western blotting, immunofluorescence, preparation of Next Generation Sequencing libraries, and other methods. The hired candidate will be responsible for organization of experiments in collaboration with other members of the lab group, independent and collaborative data collection, independent and collaborative data analysis, and preparation of results for internal and external presentation. The hired candidate will be actively involved in the preparation and writing of research manuscripts and will have the opportunity to co-author primary research articles. The candidate will also assist with general lab maintenance tasks including preparing common stock solutions, ordering reagents and supplies, organizing stock inventories, and additional duties as assigned.
This is a one-year appointment with possible extension depending on laboratory funding and candidate performance. We ideally expect at least a second year of appointment.

- Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members.
- High School Diploma
- Relevant Work Experience up to 2 years.
- Some practical experience in Drosophila genetics and/or microbiology and/or molecular genetic experimentation is desired but not required. Must be personable and interactive, and must possess excellent organizational and communication skills (both written and oral). Must be able to work independently as well as in a team environment to accomplish required tasks to achieve objectives. Demonstrated ability to multitask and balance priorities when necessary. Must be able to carry out experiments to completion with moderate guidance. Must be punctual and self-motivated with strong attention to detail. Applicants should be proficient with MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Familiarity with R, general statistics, and bioinformatic methods are helpful but not required.
