Position: Assistant Professor, Full-Time Tenure-Track Faculty Position in Machine Learning in Animal Omics in the Department of Animal Sciences (60% Research | 30% Teaching | 10% Service)

This position is available through a strategic departmental hiring plan to expand research and education to provide safe, reliable food for a growing world population, and to improve animal growth efficiency, health, and well-being. This position will focus on data science and machine learning in animal omics analyses. Needed are new computational tools to understand complex intracellular and extracellular processes that regulate animal physiology. Advances in this area can discover unrecognized opportunities for optimizing animal health, production efficiency, and well-being. This opportunity builds on our history and ongoing research in genetics, nutrition, meat science, precision management, immune and reproductive physiology, microbiology and animal systems with application to livestock and biomedical research and strengthens the preeminence of the Department of Animal Sciences.
The Department of Animal Sciences invites applications for a faculty position in the area of data science and machine learning in animal omics analyses (genomics, phenomics, epigenomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, and microbiomics). The person hired will develop a nationally and internationally recognized, extramurally funded research program in animal omics by implementing data science and machine learning methodologies to large heterogeneous data sets. Expertise in machine learning and biostatistics, with special reference to computational methods development and applications to animal growth and physiology is required. The person hired will teach undergraduate and graduate courses in these areas of expertise.
Qualifications: Ph.D. degree in Animal Science, Biology, Genomics, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Computer Science, Bioengineering, or other related fields, with a research emphasis on animal omics. Preferred qualifications include postdoctoral experience, strong record of publication, demonstrated ability to secure extramural funding, and experience teaching and mentoring students.
Responsibilities: The successful candidate will develop a nationally and internationally recognized research program supported by extramural funding, contribute to academic programs related to applications of data science and machine learning in animal omics, and perform other services expected at an academic institution.
Proposed Start Date: August 16, 2023
Salary: Commensurate with qualifications and experience
