Responsibilities
Experimental Design and Execution: The Senior Research Associate focuses on high-throughput DNA sequencing and precise manipulation of microbial communities and is responsible for cultivating microbial communities, performing molecular biology experiments, and preparing DNA libraries for sequencing.
Conducts independent experiments that align with broader project objectives.
The Senior Research Associate will design, plan, and conduct experiments in microbial biology, molecular genetics, and high-throughput DNA sequencing, analyzing data, drawing conclusions, and contributing to the research project's progress.
Makes innovative contributions in gene editing techniques, such as CRISPR/Cas9, to introduce specific mutations in a target organism for functional studies.
Leading Other Employees: The candidate will oversee the work of junior researchers, associates, and undergraduates, providing guidance, ensuring adherence to project timelines, and fostering a collaborative and productive work environment.
Lab Management: As a lab manager, the Staff Research Associate will handle daily laboratory operations, including equipment maintenance, inventory management, and safety protocol enforcement, while coordinating lab schedules and resources for efficient functioning.
Training New Employees: The Senior Research Associate will certain new lab members in relevant techniques, protocols, and safety procedures, ensuring they become proficient contributors to the research team and maintain a high standard of work quality.
Microbial Community Cultivation: The candidate will be responsible for isolating, maintaining, and optimizing the growth of diverse microbial communities under various conditions, ensuring culture purity and health, and addressing any issues related to microbial growth or contamination.
Required Qualifications
Strong foundation in microbial biology, molecular biology, and genomics, with the ability to design and execute experiments related to the manipulation and analysis of microbial communities.
Proficiency in high-throughput DNA sequencing techniques, including DNA extraction, library preparation, and basic bioinformatics analyses for quality control and data interpretation.
Experience in cultivating diverse microbial communities, including isolation, culture maintenance, and growth optimization under various conditions.
Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.
The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $62,315.34 (step 1.0) - $77,476.62 (step 12.0).
This is a 100% full-time (40 hours per week), career position that is eligible for full UC benefits.
This position is exempt and paid monthly.
