Department Overview
An exciting opportunity has been created for an experienced physician scientist to serve as Vice Chair of Research and Development for the OHSU Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine.
The Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine at OHSU is experiencing rapid growth and evolution under our interim chair, Guang Fan, MD, PhD. We are expanding our research programs and are seeking a mid-to-senior-level individual to serve as Vice Chair for Research and Development for the Department. Current research programmatic efforts in the Department include Informatics, Cancer, Cardiovesclular disorder, Infectious diseasesDevelopmental biology, , and Neurosciences. We are seeking candidates with a strong research program andt who can work across research disciplines to enhance research programs and research mentorship across all areas with the Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine.
Oregon Health & Science University is a nationally prominent research university and Oregon's only public academic health center. As a major regional referral center, OHSU has a varied and challenging caseload. The surgical pathology lab processes over 43,000 surgical specimens per year. The Department of Pathology has a collegial faculty, AP/CP residency program, a post-sophomore fellowship program, and five post-graduate fellowship programs. We are supported by excellent molecular genetic laboratories and a state-of-the-art core laboratory. OHSU offers a variety of collaborative research opportunities and is home to the Knight Cancer Institute, an international leader in research and cancer treatment.
Function/Duties of Position
The optimal candidate will be a scientist or physician-scientist with extramural funding and strong leadership skills. Leadership responsibilities as Vice Chair of Research and Development include mentorship of junior research faculty across all areas of research, oversight of the Departmental research committee to assist the Chair in expanding the depth and breadth of Department research programs, development of collaborative research relationships with basic and clinical researchers at OHSU and other adaemic medical centers, development of a business plan to grow Department research, assist in the recruitment of physician-scientists and PhD researchers into the Department, and development of educational programs and mentorship for trainees in the Department. The appointee shall report to the Chair, Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine.
Physician-scientists will have the opportunity to participate in the Anatomic Pathology or Clinical Pathology clinical services. Educational responsibilities include participation in the instructional program for residents, fellows, student fellows, medical students and training of postdoctoral fellows and graduate students. Service responsibilities include participation in committees and councils of OHSU; outreach and public service programs and professional societies.
Required Qualifications
- A physician-scientist (MD or MD/PhD) or scientist (PhD).
- Qualifications appropriate for appointment at the rank of OHSU Associate or Full Professor.
- Active grant support, including a significant record of successful NIH funding, T32 award, VA and others.
- Recognition in the field of Pathology as evidenced by involvement in academic societies at a national level.
- Progressive leadership experience, preferably in an academic medical center setting.
- If a physician-scientist, board certified by the American Board of Pathology Anatomic Pathology and Clinical Pathology.

- A physician-scientist or scientist with extramural funding and a career progression that has prepared them for a position of this scope, complexity, and scale.
- Demonstrates a strong research program that can work across research disciplines to enhance research programs and mentorship across all areas within the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine.
- Prior proven service as a visionary and strategic leader with knowledge and experience in academic institutions, health centers, and teaching hospitals.
- Demonstrates experience in fiscal management with regards to research programming.
- Proven experience working with diverse groups, along with demonstrated ability to orchestrate day to day operations at the highest levels of professional accountability.
- Experience representing healthcare organizations to the community to enhance goodwill and positive community relations.
