The Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences, College of Veterinary Medicine, Michigan State University invites applications for a faculty position in Large Animal Surgery – Equine emphasis. Depending upon the qualifications and experience of the applicant, the position will be a multi-year renewable Health Programs (HP) clinical appointment available at the Assistant/Associate/Professor level.
We are seeking a candidate interested in transformative work in clinical service, teaching and outreach. The ideal candidate will utilize the resources of MSU to become a world-recognized expert in their area and be part of our goal of making MSU CVM the destination for the world to find transformative veterinary practice and teaching. The successful candidate will be joining one of five departments affiliated with the CVM. The Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences serves Michigan through teaching about equine and food animals in the DVM program, research that ranges from biomedical research to computation methods, and clinical service to the equine and food production industries. Some faculty in the department work mainly with equine, others with cattle or research and all are dedicated to being the destination for our stakeholders. The College has two critical service units, the Veterinary Medical Center and the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. The hospital caseload is predominantly equine but includes all large animal species (bovine, caprine, ovine, porcine, camelid).
A substantial proportion of daytime clinical duty in the Veterinary Medical Center is envisioned for this position (a minimum of 70% of the position responsibility). Some after-hours emergency coverage is required for this position. The primary responsibilities of this position are: 1) Sharing primary duties for elective surgeries and daytime emergencies including food animal surgeries: 2) providing clinical service in lameness evaluation, diagnosis and treatment: 3) developing strong relationships with referring veterinarians: 4) providing didactic, laboratory and clinical instruction to veterinary students and residents; 5) participating in state and national outreach and continuing education and research activities.
The clinical team in the VMC consists of 4 ACVS and 4 ACVIM faculty that are also board certified in ACVECC (2) as well as a full complement of boarded specialists in ACVSMR (1), ACVR (1), ACVAA (4), ACVO (3), ACVIM-cardiology (2), and ACVIM-neurology (1). The hospital caseload is predominantly equine (approximately 85%) but includes all other large animal species (15%). The position offers exciting opportunities to work in a collaborative environment using state of the art facilities and equipment, including state of the art imaging (including CT, MRI, nuclear scintigraphy, ultrasound, digital radiography, and fluoroscopy). Required qualifications include DVM or equivalent degree, board certification or eligibility for Diplomate status in the American College of Veterinary Surgery.
The successful applicant will have proficiency in surgery in food animal and equine as this is an essential component of the position. The candidate should have excellent communication skills, and the ability to work effectively in a team environment with other faculty members, residents, students, and staff. The candidate should have demonstrated enthusiasm for research as well as educating the next generation of veterinarians and veterinary specialists.
