The UAB Department of Neurosurgery is seeking a Researcher II or III for the research lab of Dr. James Markert, Chair of Neurosurgery.The research focus for this lab is on investigating novel treatments for brain tumors using viral vectors and gene therapy.This position will involve work with mammalian tissue culture, mice, and a BSL II pathogen (HSV-1).
The Researcher, under minimal supervision, will perform some or all of the following depending on candidate's education and experience level.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
1.Sets up and performs experiments and procedures in support of lab goals.
2.Develops and improves techniques for the lab.
3.Contributes to planning/design of studies.
4.Collects, enters, summarizes and analyzes data.
5.Monitors results, detects and reports unusual outcomes and suggests modifications.
6.May assist in planning long or short term goals/fiscal management.
7.Performs maintenance of lab equipment and supplies.
8.Performs protein, DNA, and RNA isolation and varied assays (western blot, southern blot, PCR, etc.)
9.Prepares large quantities of oncolytic herpes virus (BSL2) grown to GLP standards for lab use in both in vitro and in vivo studies.
10.Routinely tests cell lines for mycoplasma.
11.Conducts mouse experiments and monitors body weight and behavior on a daily basis.
12.Collects mouse blood and tissue as needed.
13.Performs routine histology, immunohistochemistry, and flow cytometry as needed.
14.Cleans lab (biowaste, glassware).
15.Performs other duties as assigned.

On the job training is available, but candidates with prior experience with research animals and/or in a basic science lab is preferred.Mammalian tissue culture experience strongly desired.
