Job Summary:
The Misharin laboratory in the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Northwestern University, Feinberg School of Medicine, Chicago, is seeking a computational biologist/bioinformatician/data analyst with expertise in genomics data to support ongoing projects in our group and with collaborators.
We apply state-of-the-art genomic, computational, and machine-learning tools to understand immune mechanisms governing lung injury and repair. Our research aims to identify new biomarkers and develop new therapies to treat lung diseases and improve patient outcomes.
We are seeking candidates with training in computational biology, biostatistics, machine learning, bioinformatics, or related fields. Preferred skills include UNIX/bash scripting, high-performance computing, R and Python programming, git/GitHub and version control, familiarity with next-generation sequencing workflows and Illumina sequencing data formats, fundamentals in statistics and machine learning, and experience with RNA-seq and scRNA-seq analysis. Experience with spatial or imaging dataset analysis is a plus.
Successful candidates are expected to work closely with biologists and clinicians to jointly find solutions to complex biomedical problems. Utilizes multiple quantitative and qualitative datasets from a variety of sources and interprets results using various techniques, ranging from simple data aggregation via statistical analysis to complex data mining. Assists in the design, development and implementation of business solutions partnering with clients to identify analytical requirements. Compiles reports, charts, and tables based on established statistical methods.
Specific Responsibilities:
Strategic Planning
- Partners with clients to define requirements based on business objectives.
Administration
- Develop standardized templates, policies, and procedures for internal and external reporting.
- Designs and prepares documentation for qualitative and quantitative data analysis.
Development
- Completes a variety of statistical analyses using appropriate data and software
- Merges data from multiple sources in preparation for analysis.
- Interprets results of analyses for use in reports and presentations
Performance
- Completes data cleaning and organizes data files for analysis.
- Reviews data and Identifies quality issues
Miscellaneous
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree; OR appropriate combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Graduate degree in bioinformatics, computational biology, computer science, computer engineering, statistics, mathematics, or a similar field.
- Prior working experience with analysis of next generation sequencing data (RNA-seq/scRNA-seq, ATAC-seq), metagenomics analysis, agile and scrum methodologies, and project management.
