The Department of Oral Health Sciences (OHS) brings together faculty from different ends of the dental and oral health research spectrum into a single department that has expertise ranging from the modern experimental life sciences through the public health and behavioral sciences. OHS has the goal of improving the oral and general health and well-being of our diverse global population through research, teaching and service. OHS has a broadly defined mission that accommodates diverse faculty interests and expertise. At present, OHS enjoys faculty expertise in areas including anatomy, biochemistry, molecular biology, microbiology, biostatistics, epidemiology, behavioral science (both basic and applied), public health, dental hygiene, education, law, medicine, and clinical dentistry including faculty members with specialty training in periodontics, orthodontics, and oral medicine. OHS also sponsors the School of Dentistry's only PhD program as well as the combined DDS-PhD program and the Masters of Science program for Dental Hygiene. Our graduate programs provide advanced interdisciplinary training for graduate students to enable them to become academic and research leaders in the dental and craniofacial sciences, and to contribute to improved understanding of human oral and systemic health and disease. This is a 12-month 100% FTE position that is renewable dependent on funding.
- One or more slots on the UW T90 training grant are available for PhD or DDS scientists (i.e., postdoc) who are citizens or permanent residents of the US.
- One slot on the UW R90 training grant is available for a non-US citizen, non US permanent resident, who has a DDS.
- One R01-funded postdoc position is open for someone of any nationality.
Salary Range: Postdocs supported on the Oral Health Sciences T90 training grant will receive a stipend that conforms to the NRSA postdoc stipend scale: https://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-OD-22-132.html. Post docs not supported by a training grant will receive a salary that is subject to minimums associated with applicable collective bargaining agreement as well as Washington and Federal requirements. The base salary range for this position will be $5,459 - $6,000 per month, commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S Department of Labor prevailing wage determination.

The Postdoctoral Scholar will be a contributing member of the Cornell Lab at UWSOD to carry out funded research, develop new research skills, generate publications, contribute to writing and submitting grants, and prepare for a career as an independently funded scholar.
The successful candidate will possess a strong background in experimental sciences such as molecular biology, genetics, or biochemistry, will have some experience in bioinformatics, and will be ambitious and independent with good communication skills and a team mentality.
Major duties and responsibilities:
Carry out ongoing research projects, including potentially
- a) evaluating zebrafish mutants of genes implicated in orofacial cleft,
- b) conducting functional tests of human gene variants detected in patients with orofacial cleft, in zebrafish and/or in tissue culture,
- c) performing Crispr/Cas9-mediated homology directed engineering the genome of human cells, to test non-coding variants associated with orofacial cleft,
- d) carrying out single-cell multiomics on zebrafish to evaluate the structure of transcriptional regulatory networks governing cell fate specification.
- e) taking leadership role in manuscript writing.
- f) participating in career development activities in the lab.
The postdoctoral scholar/fellow will benefit from excellent research experience and a highly supportive and collaborative environment in the Schools of Dentistry.
- PhD, DDS, MD, MD/PhD or DDS/PhD
- A minimum of one first-author publication in a well-respected journal.
