The mission of the UCSD Center for Epigenomics is to develop a quantitative and molecular framework to study the function and regulation of the human genome, with the ultimate goal to understand the molecular basis of cancer and other human diseases. Epigenomics is at the forefront of Precision Medicine. The epigenome, a term referring to the state of DNA methylation and the covalent modifications of histone proteins in a cell, plays a central role in regulating the functional output of the genome during development. Changes in the epigenome that result from exposure to stress, pathogenic conditions and during aging can determine the patterns of gene expression and predispose an individual to diseases. Epigenome research promises to significantly improve our understanding of the factors that drive human development and disease. The UCSD Center for Epigenomics works with researchers on the UCSD campus and beyond to foster the application of epigenomic concepts and technologies to clinical, translational, and basic research.
Under the general supervision of the Center for Epigenomics' Associate Director, the Senior Epigenomics Research Associate will independently engage in research projects by designing and performing experiments to map cells' transcriptomes and epigenomes such as ATAC-seq, ChIP-seq, CUT&RUN, scATAC-seq, scRNA-seq, scMultiome, and Paired-Tag.
The incumbent will act as the primary driver for multiple collaborative research projects by implementing new workflows and standard operating procedures across novel and difficult sample types including tissues from atypical model organisms and precious clinical samples such as tissue biopsies. The incumbent will interpret the results to further optimize and scale these workflows. The incumbent will also play a key role in technology development by automating these workflows where appropriate on liquid handling robots to maximize throughput and minimize cost per sample.
The incumbent will independently design experiments and be responsible for careful record keeping, operating laboratory equipment including the Beckman Biomek i7 liquid handler, troubleshooting, quality control, and preparing complete written reports potentially resulting in publications. Additional duties may include contributing to laboratory management, organization of laboratory reagents, and maintenance of laboratory equipment.
