Position Summary:
The UCI Alpha Clinic (UCI AC) - The UCI AC provides the necessary infrastructure, clinical, and operational expertise to accelerate cell and gene therapies clinical trials at UCI. To accomplish our mission, we are working to achieve the following five goals: 1. Creating a center of excellence for cell and gene-based therapeutics that addresses the unique challenges of testing and delivering novel cell and gene therapies by integrating and building upon the extensive experience and many strengths of UCI, and our community partners; 2. Building interactive and highly trained teams and electronic data sharing systems to accelerate and translate discovery to improve human health; 3. Transforming the delivery of cell therapeutics through our proven Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) manufacturing; 4. Advancing, expanding, and integrating educational opportunities to inform patients, families, communities, and clinicians of the full range of scientifically sound and medically appropriate, regulated stem cell-based clinical trials while providing objective information about potentially dangerous and unproven procedures; 5. Serving as a regional, national and international resource for evidence-based best practices in stem cell treatments. The Institute for Clinical and Translational Science (ICTS) - The ICTS is one of 62 NIH funded Clinical and Translational Science Awards (NCATS) awardees in the US. The ICTS Mission is to improve health and healthcare by catalyzing translational research across the spectrum and by advancing the science of translation. The cohesive theme of ICTS is to build, track, implement, and evaluate sustainable programs that advance innovation, quality, efficiency, and value of translational science across the broad spectrum of clinical research. The ICTS functions as a local centerpiece for the national program, dedicated to advancing scientific discovery and medical breakthroughs. Their goal is to accelerate these discoveries from the lab and translate them into life-altering medical care. The Evaluation Team within the ICTS is tasked with tracking and evaluating the impact of ICTS activities for the purpose of quality improvement. The ICTS provides diverse resources to UCI researchers, such as faculty and student training awards, pilot study seed funding, expert consultation on statistical analyses, participant recruitment, and implementation of human subjects' research studies, and professional education. The Center for Biomedical Informatics within the ICTS is tasked with providing and innovating informatics solutions to facilitate clinical research, accelerate results translation, and engender the transformation of hospitals and clinics into a learning health system. UCI Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHC) - The ultimate health benefit of any clinical trial or human-based research depends on partnerships to strategize recruitment that enhance the enrollment of a diverse cohort of volunteers. Efforts must be made to reach out to those sectors of our community who have not been well represented in clinical investigation. Clinical research must focus on issues of health that are relevant to the communities served and must be formulated through collaboration and partnerships with potential volunteers and patients, and the staff and care-providers on the immediate interface with the community. The UCI FQHC is a natural and necessary partners in the clinical research enterprise of an academic health center like UC Irvine.
This is a joint position at UCI, coordinating between Alpha Clinic (AC), Institute for Clinical and Translational Science (ICTS), the School of Medicine (SOM), and the UCI-affiliated Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC). The incumbent will report to the AC Assistant Director of Clinical Research Operations, with dotted line reporting to the ICTS Administrative Director and School of Medicine Director of Research Operations. Under the general direction of the Assistant Director of Clinical Research Operations, the UCI FQHC-Clinical Research Navigator (CRN) will serve as the main link between the FQHC Board, and leadership and the UCI principal investigators, study coordinators, and research teams that conduct clinical research at the FQHC sites. This position will be classified as a clinical research coordinator (CRC). The main responsibilities of the UCI FQHC-CRN are:
Screening and enrolling patients into interventional clinical trials
Ensure that research activities are smoothly integrated into clinical care by (a) managing the processes through which clinical research at the FQHC have been vetted and approved by FQHC leadership and clinical providers (b) tracking all clinical research activities at the FQHC (c) providing reports on research progress at regular intervals to FQHC leadership and board of directors (d) working with clinical staff to optimize research activities so that interference with patient care workflow is minimized
Support robust community engagement with clinical research conducted at FQHC by (a) deploying Community Engagement Studies to elicit community input into protocol design (b) ensuring that research results are appropriately communicated to research volunteers
Facilitate the process by which researchers engage the FQHC as partners in research by acting as a liaison between FQHC leadership and UCI clinical research entities such as Center for Clinical Research (CCR), ICTS, and the Stern Center for Cancer Clinical Trials and Research.
Facilitate the regulatory approval process (e.g., Institutional Review Board (IRB) submissions, conflict of interest committees) to ease the regulatory burden on FQHC clinical researchers

$31.03 - $51.13 (Hourly Rate)
Required:
3 to 5 years of related work experience
Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Science, or equivalent experience with a nationally-recognized clinical research coordinator certification (e.g. Society of Clinical Research Associates (SOCRA), Association of Clinical Research Professionals (ACRP), etc.).
Demonstrated high-level communication skills to convey information in a clear and concise way, synthesizing information and presenting it to others. Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize a complex and dynamic workload. Ability to multitask and meet deadlines, despite interruptions. Ability to independently exercise discretion and sound judgment. Demonstrated skill in interacting with persons of various social, cultural, economic, and educational backgrounds. Ability to prioritize assignments and achieve high productivity/quality with short time frames, under rigid deadlines, and /or in environments with frequent workload changes and competing demands. Skill in working independently, taking initiative and following through on assignments. Ability to think critically, compile data from various sources, analyze data, and prepare reports. Required High level of integrity and honesty in maintaining confidentiality. Strong attention to detail. Working knowledge of computer software including Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
