DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW
The Department of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology (EEB), is devoted to the study of ecological and evolutionary processes in marine and terrestrial and freshwater environments. Class offerings, as well as research opportunities, focus on the varied natural environments in the Monterey Bay region, throughout the western US, and in more distant locations such as Mexico, Tahiti, Australia, and the Far East. This emphasis on field studies is a unique focus of our variety of undergraduate majors, within this context they address not only basic ecological and evolutionary processes but also the application of this knowledge to improve conservation strategies and environmental quality.
JOB SUMMARY
The researcher will coordinate the population genomics labs, manage research projects locally and nationally, maintain and promote open science practices, help with research group administration, and assist with maintaining a collaborative and supportive research environment for all members.
APPOINTMENT INFORMATION
Budgeted Salary: $24.15 - $26.30/hour. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience. Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary above the posted range. The salary shown above is the budgeted range the University reasonably expects to pay.

JOB DUTIES
30% - Genomics Lab Coordination
Purchases equipment and supplies, develops and maintains standard operating procedures for wet lab and bioinformatics, maintains equipment, coordinates research projects.
30% - Genomic Research Assistance
Samples genomic material above and below water, builds DNA and RNA libraries for sequencing, applies bioinformatic pipelines.
20% - Training
Teaches, trains, and supervises students in the laboratory and during bioinformatic analyses.
10% - Lab Administration
Manages budgets, organizes travel and meetings, assists with grant applications and reporting.
10% - Open Science Practices Maintenance
Maintains metadata, data archiving, scientific computation documentation, and trains students in best practices.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Graduation from high school or a General Education Diploma and three years of laboratory experience; or two years of college including courses in the natural, and physical sciences and two years of laboratory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Computer literacy in R and a commitment to open science practices.
Excellent written communication skills.
Excellent oral communication skills.
Exceptional organizational skills.
Strong ability to accomplish tasks independently.
Experience with population genomics and bioinformatic analyses.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
A Bachelor's degree in ecology, evolution, or a related scientific discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience that demonstrates comprehensive knowledge and understanding of research principles and practices.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
