Job Summary Job Description: Plays a role in bioinformatics collaboration, consulting, and education to physician scientists and basic research scientists on biomedical and translational research. Contributes to preparation of scientific manuscripts including writing of bioinformatics methods, design, and results, and drafts manuscripts on bioinformatics methods and analyses to journals. Provides education and consultation to research staff on basic and advanced bioinformatics design and analyses development and issues.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Data Analysis: Works closely with PI in the selection of bioinformatics method and the collection of experimental data. Plays a critical role in bioinformatics research projects, managing and advising researchers on specification and conduct of bioinformatics analysis.
Analysis Result Reports: Identifies and develops data analysis reports and presentations needed for managing the data analysis and monitor progress of projects.
Manuscripts: Contributes to preparation of manuscripts including writing of bioinformatics methods and design, relevant results and data tables and graphs.
Grants and Funding Solicitations: Contributes to preparation of grants including writing of bioinformatics methods and design, relevant summary of results using tables and graphs, and justifications of selections of specific bioinformatics approaches and data analysis pipelines.
Consultation and collaboration: Collaborates and consults with investigators and researchers on design, collection, and analysis of biomedical research data.
Teaching and Consultation: Provides education and consultation to investigators, research residents and fellows, faculty and key research study staff in the lab and collaborators on basic and advanced design and analyses issues.
Project Management: Leads and manages the work of bioinformatics analysis requiring assistance from the PIs and researcher involved in relevant projects. Collaborates with bioinformatics programmers and master's level Bioinformatician on experimental design and methods for analyses.
Bioinformatics service: Provides positive and effective bioinformatics advice to lab and outside collaborators on joint projects. Contributes to teamwork within and between departments, divisions, programs and other organizations.
Compliance with Policies and Procedures: Ensures work in the lab, division, program, department, and other organizations is performed in conformance with established hospital, program, state, and federal policies and procedures.
Minimum Knowledge and Skills Required
Work requires knowledge of study design, sampling methods, problem solving, and bioinformatics methods typically acquired through completion of an undergraduate degree in Bioinformatics, Informatics, Computer Sciences, Statistics, Biostatistics, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.
The knowledge needed could also be obtained through completion of a degree in a closely related field and two to four years of experience, including experience in bioinformatics consulting and analysis, assistance with protocol generation and grant writing, and collaboration in scientific writing.
Work requires analytical skills to resolve scientific, ethical, regulatory, financial, and administrative problems.
Work requires personal, educational, and leadership skills to effectively train and consult biomedical study investigators, research project staff, and Bioinformaticians.
Work requires the ability to handle multiple problems and projects at one time, ensuring the accurate and timely completion of all projects, and dealing with conflicting views or issues and mediating fair and workable solutions.
Work requires the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
