The Division of Genetic Medicine in the Department of Pediatrics is a Clinical/Science Division that provides patient care throughout the WWAMI Region via service contracts for outpatient genetics clinics and inpatient consultation services. Sites of practice include but are not limited to Seattle Children’s Hospital, Swedish Medical Center, Mary Bridge, Providence Medical Center (Alaska), and Alaska Native Healthcare Center. Research programs are located primarily within the UW Health Sciences Building. Revenues from clinical activity are approximately $3.9 million annually and funds from grants/contracts and endowments are approximately $1.8 million in directs and indirects. There are 24 regular faculty members. The division offices are located at UW Health Science Building (HSB) and operations for the Division is under the direction of the Division Chief.

The Division of Genetic Medicine has an outstanding opportunity for a Web Publications Editor to join the GeneReviews team. This position is responsible for finalizing all chapters for publication and supporting web pages and managing their publication online, as well as record keeping, liaising with the internal editing team and external funding agency, and supervising one part-time editorial assistant.

GeneReviews is an international point-of-care online resource for busy clinicians that provides clinically relevant and medically actionable information for inherited conditions in a standardized journal-style format, covering diagnosis, management, and genetic counseling for healthcare providers and their patients. Each chapter in GeneReviews is written by one or more experts on the specific condition or disease and goes through rigorous editing, peer review, and final polishing processes before publication online.

This position has substantial responsibility for finalizing and communicating information designed to keep medical providers informed about diagnostic testing options, clinical characteristics, and management of rare genetic syndromes. Individuals exercise discretion in finalizing chapters for publication after the chapters have been reviewed separately by other medical content editors to ensure accurate content. Other duties may include creating ideas, laying out artwork, creating tables, and being in direct contact with the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Duties & Responsibilities:

Document review 50%
•Conducts a comprehensive review of all updated and new chapters before publishing online
•Makes any necessary corrections to figures
•Is responsible for finalizing (with Editors) / implementing / providing documentation of standard language & house style

Publication 25%
•Preps all chapters for publication, including converting the document/text type as needed
•Troubleshoots and corrects any conversion errors
•Publishes chapters online

Records 15%
•Maintains records of all chapter publication activity and tracks contract targets
•Keeps database of author and chapter data up to date
•Maintains archive of iterative edits to all chapters (including initial submissions, regular updates, and periodic revisions)
•Contributes to NIH annual report regarding contract targets

External communication 5%
•Liaises with NIH contacts regarding new or updated pathogenic variants
•Collaborates with NIH contacts to facilitate XML conversion and online publishing
•Communicates with chapter authors as needed to address language usage queries

Internal communication 5%
•Keeps GeneReviews team apprised of publishing activity
•Communicates with Medical Editors, Genetic Counselor, and Project Manager as needed to address language usage queries or chapter issues
•Contributes to internal processes by implementing new standard language and keeping templates up to date
•Attends weekly team meeting

Minimum Requirements:
•Bachelor's degree in relevant field
•2 years’ content creation and editing experience

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

Additional Requirements:
•Advanced skills with Microsoft Word including Styles and Macros
•Proficiency with Excel, Adobe, and graphics editing
•Ability to work well independently and with a team; strong interpersonal skills
