Job Description
Non-ACGME accredited fellowship position to gain expertise in sickle cell disease (SCD) by training with our multi-disciplinary team. This is a one year fellowship of combined clinical and research training. At the end of the year, fellows will understand the acute and chronic complications of SCD and strategies for management with a focus on newer therapies. There will be exposure to the use of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and gene therapy in SCD, hemoglobin diagnostics, and SCD clinical trials. Each fellow will conduct a mentored research project under the guidance of an established investigator in SCD.


Required Skills
MD or DO required.

Applicants must have completed one or more of the following:

a) Residency training in Internal Medicine or Medicine/Pediatrics
b) Fellowship training in adult or pediatric Hematology (with or without Oncology)

Applicants must be committed to participating in a busy clinical service and to dedicating additional time to scholarly activities.

Fellows will follow patients longitudinally in the Hematology clinic at BMC and will attend the twice monthly multi-disciplinary clinic in SCD with physicians from Hematology, Nephrology, Pulmonology and Primary Care. They will participate in the acute management of non-complicated vasoocclusive events in the Hematology/Oncology clinic infusion center. They will provide direct consultation on all patients with sickle cell disease admitted to the inpatient service of Boston Medical Center. Formal education in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and gene therapy and its use in SCD will be provided. Fellows will participate in ongoing industry and NIH sponsored clinical trials under the mentorship of Drs. Jean-Antoine Ribeil of Hematology/Oncology and Elizabeth Klings of Pulmonary/Critical Care. It is an expectation of the fellowship that trainees conduct mentored clinical, basic science or translational research. Prior to the beginning of the fellowship, a mentor will be selected and a research project (s) will be identified under the mentors guidance. Fellows will be expected to participate in the education of medical students, residents and other fellows on topics related to SCD through formal small group education sessions and one on one clinical training.
