MEDICAL & MOLECULAR GENETICS (IN-MMGE-IUINA)

One of the first human genetics departments in the country, the Department of Medical and Molecular Genetics at IU School of Medicine has a rich history of training geneticists and genetic counselors and providing genetic consultation and counseling services. The department contributes to the understanding of numerous genetic conditions through the integration of basic research in genetic and genomic mechanisms, translational research in disease models, and clinical trials in rare and common genetic diseases.

The Scalable Compute Archive (SCA) builds, delivers, and operates customized full stack web applications integrated with secure data management systems and scientific software application pipelines. Department Specific Responsibilities

• Prototype, develop and test full-stack web applications using modern Javascript frameworks and libraries. Improve and maintain existing projects (Vue.js)
• Work on distributed systems that process large amounts of data.
• Work with stakeholders and developers to identify complex system needs including security concerns, resource requirements, needed software and dependencies and implement them in the final system.
• Develop unit and integration tests for existing service stacks. Write documentation for end users.
• Provide experienced analysis and programming related to the design, development, and support of research systems.
• Develop and implement well-engineered software that supports and enriches research productivity and reliability; evolve software development and data services with the corresponding research to ensure that modern standards of reproducible code are kept.
• Operate, monitor, and maintain the integrity of a broad scope of cyber infrastructure systems (storage, cluster computing, databases, virtual machines, network...)
• Provide experienced consultation to researchers in the use of a broad set of state-of-the-art research systems, tools, and software to enable research productivity; partner with researchers to co-create and co-learn relevant computing and data capabilities.
• Connect, facilitate, and participate in interactions between researchers and technology providers; provide regular communication to systems and software/data professionals.
• Engage and advise a broad set of researchers through support requests and providing advanced understanding (i.e. email, ticketing systems, chats); follow and contribute in establishing best practice documentation, processes and procedures to resolve support requests.
• Support and collaborate with researchers and other key IT and Data Center partners.
• Enhance service delivery by learning and having a full understanding of local research computing and data resources.
• Work on grant funded projects with a diverse set of stakeholders including cyber infrastructure professionals and faculty members.

General Responsibilities

• Provides advanced analysis and programming related to the design, development, and support of systems.
• Consults with stakeholder(s) to define system requirements, problems, and proposals; provides leadership for detailed studies, for presenting detailed requirements/designs to stakeholder(s); obtains agreement and approval for proposed updates/changes.
• Conducts advanced systems studies that include feasibility, conceptual design, cost/benefit analysis, and development/implementation planning; may prepare estimates of resource requirements in terms of time, cost, and equipment for systems design, as well as programming.
• Prepares conversion and systems implementation plans and schedules; writes specialized routines and modules for application systems and follows through to insure that systems are successfully implemented.
• Leads in the documentation of systems analysis and programming efforts (changes, new functionality, issues/problem resolution).
• Researches and stays up-to-date on systems analysis and programming best practices, tools, and approaches; disseminates information to team members and junior peers to promote best practices as appropriate.
• Collaborates and contributes on committees in sharing and improving systems analysis and programming practices across the university.
• May serve as project lead; often provides guidance and support to junior peers.

EDUCATION

Required

• Bachelor's degree (preferably in computer science or related field)

WORK EXPERIENCE

• 5 years of systems programming/analysis or related experience

• Excited to deal with interesting challenges. Capable of identifying creative solutions when faced with unfamiliar tasks or unusual error conditions.

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. This position is eligible for remote work, subject to change in the future based on university policy and business needs.

Selected candidate will be offered $59,841.60 per year to $89,752.00 per year based upon experience and internal equity within the department.
