The Department of Pathology and Cell Biology at Columbia University Irving Medical Center seeks a highly qualified Genetic Counselor to join the Inter-Departmental Genetic Counselor Program (IDGCP) as a Lecturer and genetic counselor in Obstetrics and Gynecology at CUIMC.

In this role, the Genetic Counselor will provide patient care in Obstetrics & Gynecology and act as a liaison between OB-GYN and the CUIMC molecular diagnostic laboratories. This position involves four days providing clinical genetic counseling and one day dedicated to the laboratory role. This represents a unique opportunity for clinically-oriented genetic counselors to operate in an interdisciplinary intellectual community with close links to both the clinical laboratories and research counselors and genomicists of the Institute for Genomic Medicine.

Responsibilities Include:

· Under limited supervision, provide reproductive genetic counseling to a diverse group of obstetric and preconception patients referred due to family histories of genetic disease, abnormal screening results, fetal anomalies, prior affected pregnancies, complex multifetal gestations and those seeking invasive diagnostic testing (CVS and amniocentesis).

· Work as part of a cutting edge multidisciplinary team including Maternal Fetal Medicine, pediatric specialists, and the Center for Prenatal Pediatrics in the care of patients with fetal malformations.

· Coordinate the ordering of and counsel patients on clinical genetic test results such as prenatal microarray, single-gene testing and exome sequencing.

· Supervise students enrolled in the Columbia University Genetic Counseling Graduate Program during their reproductive fieldwork.

· Conduct in-take screening, risk assessment, explain nature and scope of testing procedures.

· Act as a liaison between the clinical department and the molecular diagnostic laboratories.

· Support the clinical testing services of the PGL and PGM laboratories by assisting in the interpretation of test results.

· Communicate results to patients and families and write summary reports.

· Develop and present in-service education to physicians and other health care providers as it relates to PGL and PGM test availability, TAT, requirements, and limitations.

· Attend and participate in professional meetings and directed educational opportunities, and have an active role in the drafting of manuscripts and publication of findings.

· Participate in other educational, research, and academic service programs in the Department in accordance with the wishes of the department chair.

Required Skills:

· Ability to work both independently and as part of a genetic counseling team.

· Excellent oral and written communication skills.

· Ability to work collaboratively in multi- disciplinary teams.

Preferred Qualifications:

· Conversational Spanish (preferred but not required).

· Board eligible or board certified as a Genetic Counselor by the American Board of Genetic Counseling.

· Experience in the provision of prenatal genetic counseling services, or strong focus on prenatal rotations in graduate school (preferred but not required).

Education Requirements:

· Master's Degree in Genetic Counseling
