Position Summary
Stony Brook Medicine is currently recruiting for a full-time certified genetic counselor with focus in prenatal diagnoses, as well as providing collaborative support for the Stony Brook Cancer Center and pediatric services as part of the clinical and medical geneticist team. This position is integral to the Coordinated Fetal Care Program and provides the opportunity excel in multidisciplinary teams focused on excellence in patient diagnosis, care coordination and patient-centered communication.
Duties of an Genetic Counselor may include the following but are not limited to:
- Provide genetic counseling for prenatal patients identified with maternal or fetal genetic disorders or anomalies.
- Collaborate with genetic counseling team members to provide cross-coverage of Cancer and Pediatric services as needed.
- Discuss benefits and limitations of genetic testing options.
- Assist families in understanding genetic disorders: probably course of the disorder, available management strategies, and recurrence risks.
- Develop and present education and related information with team as appropriate.
- Participate in research protocols and collaborative patient care initiatives as directed.
- Perform administrative tasks related to counseling services and committees or special projects in which participation is expected.
- Provide teaching and supervision to students or other health care professionals as appropriate.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree, Master's degree in Genetic Counseling
- Certification in Genetic Counseling by the American Board of Medical Genetics/American Board of Genetic Counseling
- Excellent communication skills, compassion for patients and collaborative work ethic.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Spanish speaking preferred.
- Demonstrated experience counseling in all areas: Prenatal, Pediatrics, Cancer
- Proven ability work in both team-based and autonomous environments.

In accordance with the New York State Department of Health (DOH) regulation that all hospitals and nursing homes "continuously require all personnel to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19," Candidates who are not already partially vaccinated must obtain the first dose of the vaccine within three (3) calendar days of acceptance of conditional job offer and must obtain any subsequent doses in accordance with the vaccine protocol Candidates who are partially vaccinated, but not yet fully vaccinated, must complete their vaccination series within three (3) calendar days of job offer or in accordance with vaccine manufacture protocol, whichever comes later.
The regulation also includes those who may be affiliated with or interact with employees of a hospital or nursing home. The regulation allows for limited exemptions with reasonable accommodations, consistent with applicable law.

- Successfully complete pre-employment physical examination and obtain medical clearance from Stony Brook Medicine's Employee Health Services*
- Complete electronic reference check with a minimum of three (3) professional references.
- Successfully complete a 4 panel drug screen*
- Meet Regulatory Requirements for pre employment screenings.
- Provide a copy of any required New York State license(s)/certificate(s).
Failure to comply with any of the above requirements could result in a delayed start date and/or revocation of the employment offer.
