The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Public Health is conducting a national search for an innovative and accomplished leader for the position of Chair of the Department of Biostatistics. Offering unparalleled opportunities for research, teaching, and service, the Department of Biostatistics has expertise in various research areas including spatial statistics, bioinformatics, statistical genetics, machine learning, causal inference and clinical trials and is home to a nationally-recognized data coordinating center for several ongoing multi-site studies. The Department of Biostatistics includes 19 primary faculty members with extramural funding from 7 different institutes at the NIH, PCORI and the CDC, and offers 4 degree programs (MS, MSPH, DrPH, and PhD).
We are recruiting a Chair with visionary leadership to guide a department that is experiencing remarkable growth. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated record of scholarly accomplishments, extramural research support, and teaching experience to warrant appointment at the rank of Professor with tenure. A doctoral degree in Biostatistics or a related field is required and proven leadership experience is preferred. UAB is an internationally renowned academic medical center and the Chair will have significant opportunities to further develop and foster interdisciplinary research collaborations campus-wide.
This position is critical in guiding our vision as the Department of Biostatistics at UAB to remain a leader in biostatistics research and education by providing world-class data management and analysis services through data coordinating centers for multicenter studies and clinical trials, advancing cutting-edge biostatistical methodology and collaborative investigation, and offering unique and in-demand graduate training for the next generations of biostatisticians. The chair will accomplish these goals by steering the Department of Biostatistics Vice Chairs for Education and Research as well as the Director of the Biostatistics, Data Management, and Analysis Core (BDMAC). In addition, this position provides critical leadership to the School of Public Health as a part of the Executive Team. At the University level, many leaders have recognized the need for a strong Biostatistics Department capable of meeting the methodology needs of numerous research groups across campus.

In fall 2018, UAB had a third consecutive year of record-high over all enrollment with 21,923 students, including its largest freshman class ever (2,299), with enrollment growth in every school on campus and in the acclaimed UAB Honors College.
