The Giraldez Lab is seeking a postgraduate associate interested in zebrafish husbandry to learn the zebrafish research model. It requires hands on work and maintenance of the freshwater tropical fish large fish facility under the supervision of the principal investigator of the laboratory. Must be self-motivated and physically capable of maintaining 10-liter fish tanks in shelving units. The focus of the overall project is to use zebrafish as a model system to study vertebrate development and behavior. For more information on our lab, see https://www.giraldezlab.org/.
The new hire will receive training in Genetics, Molecular and Developmental Biology using the Zebrafish model. They will learn about the CRISPR technique different stages of zebrafish development as well as identifying the different mutants, phenotypes, and how to characterize gene expression in the zebrafish model. Candidate will be trained on several necessary lab techniques including RNA and DNA extraction, cloning, in-situ probe generation, in-situ hybridization, zebrafish tissue collection, genotyping using PCR and gel electrophoresis, and data interpretation and analysis. They will also learn how to maintain and document fish lines, prepare fish food, feed fish, check and maintain water quality, breed fish (both wild type and mutant), raise young, maintain tanks and equipment, make solutions, track and maintain optimal fish health. Additionally will be trained on how to document results using SnapGene, Illustrator, and Photoshop.
The postgraduate associate will be mentored by assigned members of the Giraldez lab to gain experience in experimental design, execution and analysis of experiments, lab meeting presentation and time management.
