The Program in Neuroscience at Bates College invites applications for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level to begin in the fall of 2023. We welcome applications from any sub-discipline that studies the function of the brain and mind. We are especially interested in candidates whose work has potential clinical/medical applications. Bates values innovative, inclusive pedagogy and active scholarship and seeks applicants who can successfully integrate undergraduates in their research. The College and the Neuroscience Program are committed to enhancing the diversity of our campus community and curriculum. The most competitive applicants will have a record of engaging people from underrepresented backgrounds in STEM fields.

We welcome applications from individuals who are broadly trained Ph.D. scientists from Neuroscience, Psychology, Biology, Computer Science, or related fields. The new faculty member will join ongoing cross-STEM initiatives in inclusive pedagogy, equity and inclusion, and curricular renovation.

Bates faculty typically teach five courses per year (laboratory sections count as 0.5-course credits). Teaching responsibilities for this position include Introduction to Neuroscience and additional courses that could include lab-based instruction in topics such as cognitive neuroscience, systems neuroscience, bioinformatics, or computational neuroscience.

The position includes developing an active research program involving undergraduates and advising senior theses. Undergraduate advising and service on institutional committees are also part of the work that all faculty share.

Bates College

Bates College is a residential liberal arts college in Lewiston, Maine with approximately 1800 students; 26.1% identify as black, indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC), and 12.1% are first-generation students. The student-to-faculty ratio is 10:1, and 24% of faculty identify as BIPOC.  Lewiston is a diverse and growing city in Maine, two and a half hours north of Boston and 45 minutes from a burgeoning Portland technology start-up scene (e.g. Roux Institute).

This work is supported by an HHMI Inclusive Excellence grant to support transforming how we teach STEM, a SHULER Education Foundation Grant to support financial aid for Pell-eligible, low-income, and undocumented students, and Mellon Foundation Curricular Transformation Grants. Teaching is supported by a new Center for Inclusive Teaching and Learning, community-engaged learning, and study abroad are encouraged and robustly supported.

Bates supports new faculty with a course reduction in the first year of teaching, formal mentoring,  and new-faculty development programming. Bates provides tenure-track faculty with a paid pre-tenure leave and generous financial support for post-tenure sabbaticals. Faculty scholarship is supported by start-up packages, the new Bonney Science Center, internal grants, and a robust external grants office. Faculty research is routinely supported by the NSF, NIH, and other external funding sources.

Application Instructions

The review of applications will begin on January 15, 2023. Applicants should submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, graduate transcript, teaching statement, and a research statement. The candidate’s past and potential contributions to equity, inclusion, and diversity with regard to underrepresented groups should be addressed either in a separate, additional document or integrated into the teaching and research statements. The search committee will request letters of recommendation from three referees for short-listed candidates. Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a background check.

Qualifications

A Ph.D. is required by August 1, 2023. Additional relevant work either before or after graduate school, is seen as beneficial but is not required.
