Position overview Position title: Arribere Lab: Junior Specialist - Assistant Specialist Salary range: Commensurate with qualifications and experience. The posted UCSC salary scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. See Table Represented Specialist Series Fiscal Year. A reasonable estimate for this position is $49,000 (Junior Specialist, Step 1) or $56,600 (Assistant Specialist, Step 1).
Percent time: Full-time (100%)

Position duration: Initial appointment will be for one year, with the possibility of reappointment. Should the hiring unit propose reappointment; a review to assess performance will be conducted. Reappointment is also contingent upon the availability of funding.

Position Description
Assistant Professor Joshua Arribere in the Department of Molecular, Cell, and Developmental Biology at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for one or more research specialists. The selected candidate(s) will contribute to a research program in quality control of gene expression, focusing on RNA and protein metabolism and should have a command of genetics, basic biochemistry, and molecular biology. Duties will include generation of C. elegans strains (via mutagenesis, CRISPR/Cas9, crossing), nucleic acid extraction and analysis (e.g., deep sequencing library preparation), ribosomal preparation and analysis (e.g., ribosome footprinting), and protein analysis (immunoblotting, protein fluorescence).
The positions duties will also include general lab management responsibilities such as ordering supplies, implementing laboratory safety program requirements, and overseeing undergraduate students. The position will require the research specialist(s) to consistently employ excellent communication skills, effectively plan and execute research projects, and successfully work both independently and collaboratively.
We prefer candidates who possess any or all of the following areas of professional experience: experience with gene expression; experience with the nematode C. elegans or other model organisms. Applicants with expertise in these areas are strongly encouraged to apply.

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
For appointment to the junior specialist rank: B.A. or B.S. degree (or foreign equivalent) in molecular biology, cell biology, genetics, biochemistry, computational biology, or related field.
For appointment to the assistant specialist rank: Master's degree or a B.A. or B.S. degree and a minimum of two years of post-baccalaureate experience using molecular biology in a research or clinical laboratory. The degree must be in molecular biology, cell biology, genetics, biochemistry, computational biology, or related field and foreign equivalent degrees will be considered.
Experience with molecular biology techniques, including but not limited to the following: PCR, recombinant DNA technology, extraction and analysis of nucleic acid and ribonucleoprotein complexes, and immunoblotting.
