Position description The Wolf Lab in the Division of Infectious Diseases and Vaccinology (School of Public Health) and the Center for Computational Biology at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for a Junior/Assistant Specialist, in the area of gut microbiome research.
This position will support the Wolf Lab by performing microbial culturing techniques and gnotobiotic animal husbandry. We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic biologist with the ability to learn new techniques and troubleshoot experimental systems. The microbiota of the mammalian gut is a complex community of individual microbial strains shaped by diet, microbial competition, and the host. The Wolf lab studies the assembly and function of the gut microbiota in vitro (anaerobic culture) and in vivo (gnotobiotic mice). The Specialist position will support the lab's research in both model systems and interact with Ph.D. students and other trainees.
Position Duties include:
Bacterial culturing and careful management of laboratory stocks.
Molecular biology techniques such as DNA isolation, PCR, and sequence library preparation.
Daily care of research animals in the germ-free/gnotobiotic facility as well as experimental protocols. This may include maintenance of flexible film isolators and supply cylinders, colony management, cage cleaning and sanitation, animal observation, and collection of experimental samples.
Purchasing equipment and reagents.
